Whilst trying in vain to download EWQLSO's new free package, I took a break and had a go at remastering the above (different IR, para EQ, compression etc). Now I'm beginning to wonder whether I need it. Miroslav's still holding out for me. I really like the intimacy.

  • no score? ok..

this is good... those slowly transforming chords at the start are pretty haunting- gave me a shiver anyway.. I liked the way you built up tension and restated the beginning with a grander orchestration, nice contrast between solo instruments (eg clarinet) and block orchestral sonorities. I have to say now i hated your flute patch...as a flute player, it offends me! ...very synthetic sounding...but thats hardly your fault! I noticed the same thing with the strings in places. nice ending...fades out beautifully! do you have other movements with this? I'd like to hear them!

-btw, I downloaded that EWQL free pack, the one you have to take the questionnaire for... and I found it to be a complete waste of time. Its got good marimba samples and a few other things, but i failed to find any string or WW samples..i was very disappointed,, maybe its just my VST noobery.. i dont know, nice movement though! :)
  • I totally agree with you about the flute patch (Miroslav). Because I was writing long notes, I used the looped patched, which makes the viibrato robotic (horrible). I'll change it (somehow), and get back to you.

I'm glad you like the music. The oher 3 movements are on my profile page.

  • Apart from the music... just the samples...

I think your strings could actually sound better... The rest of instruments seem good to me. Maybe turn down the treble of the strings and add little bit bass and middles (???)... I find them too artificial and rough, considering you might want them to sound like an orchestral group, rather than a keyboard - no offence, eh?

Also the feeling of orchestration and harmonious process within your piece is alot my taste - reminding of the composers at the end of the classic era - leading to a sense of comfort... as in hearing "the most timeless of 'em all".

Do you like Beethoven alot? Just being curious... Hope to hear a finale sometime.

    Ario.
  • Thanks Ario. The remaining 3 movements are on my profile page (including the finale). I'm in the process of taking Paul Cecchetti's comments on board, which include the strings, so standby for an improved version appearing in due course. Meanwhile, I hope you like the rest of my symphony.

  • I enjoyed this piece, and I agree with the previous comments on the samples. EQing the strings might help and poking around for a better flute sound might help too. The brass sounds pretty good though. Mix wise you might want to try lowering the percussion a bit and see how that strikes you. It certainly isn't a problem where it sits now, just a small suggestion. Good stuff!
