My "small" big band experience

Hello everyone!

In my piece "Caroline" I gave a try to the big band instruments: trumpet, alto&tenor saxes, trombone (I have never used them before). The form of the piece theme is AABA. Two solos were performed by the outstanding musicians: Alexander Lavrov (piano) and Vadim Zaydin (trumpet). I gave the special attention to the chorus line.

Any feedback will be welcome!

I like a lot of this. Not sure if its intended but at the beginning I got the impression of jazz arising from chaos which actually got my full attention, I do wish that part could have lasted a bit longer. My favorite part is the trumpet phrasing around 3:00. The only thing I didn't care much for was the frankly stated theme from about :22 to :54 and its repeat at the end, while there's nothing wrong with it, my personal taste would have preferred a more artistic or even corrupted version in its place that would put it more on par with the excellence of the rest of the piece and landed it on my personal favorites list. Overall, though, its nicely done.

  • The arrangement is very nice and it's too bad that the shaker isn't mic'd.  That would have helped. Also, piano should have been an actual piano sound, not electric piano, which I felt detracted. Otherwise, nice arrangement. I'm not going to say much about the balance and mix because in a live situation in a small hall, not much you can do about that!
