Hey, everyone, and a merry Christmas if you celebrate the festival.

Question - is there any way to message a member without having to ask if you can become their "friend" then await their approval...Sheesh! I find the idea presumptuous and rude. It's like I meet someone in a face-to-face setting and start with "Can I be your friend?" I mean, one makes friends as they go along!

I just wanted to send a Christmas message to a member who hasn't appeared too often recently.

  • Nope
  • My feelings too. I'm not much of an internet forum user now. I have a presence on two other fora, the ABRSM music forum and a model-making one, that allow instant messaging unless the recipient has blocked the sender; but I'm told most fora allow this.

I'll just have to let it pass here.

I agree that a simple messaging capability would be welcome. No one seems to use the chat room, and it's not personal anyway. But most likely Ning doesn't allow it. Although you would kind of think that they would, given that this is a paid forum.

  • If you have a personal web site of any kind, you can usually find code for a contact box somewhere on the internet, which you can put on your web site without necessarily giving your email address with it.  The contact link on my member page on this site has such a box.

Another technique is to make a jpg of your email address and post that on your web site or on any member page you have where you can post an image.
