Music Composers Unite!

Hi All,

I wanted to share what I have so far and see what you think. I like the way it is sounding so far. I know i have to improve the recording quality and my guitar playing a bit. It has been nice for me to see how composing is making me a better guitar player because it is allowing me to see how the quality of how I play is affecting whether my composing ideas can really come to life.

I feel like what I have so far could be the chorus of the song and I want to create a verse section that is more subdued. I have also thought of having the verse or another part of the song transition into a major key. Is there a good music theory for knowing how to transition from a minor key to a major one? Thanks

Hi, Diego C,

Well it's certainly a nice tune, perhaps a hint of Portuguese/Brazilian. If you could excuse me saying so, reminiscent of one of my favourite Brazillians: Luiz Bonfa in his earlier days.

Just my own response is that it sounds fine as a main tune and now needs a contrasting 'middle bit', something in contrast, say, moving up to the relative major or the subdominant.

Look forward to hearing what you decide upon. And great, you taking up composing. We all have headaches about that at times - what to do next?!

Cheers,

Dane.

Very nice, Diego.

This has soul. I agree with what has already been said, and I can imagine distant-sounding brass in the background mariachi-style here and there. But I also like it very much as is and look forward to hearing what you do with it.

Hi Dane, thanks so much for your comment! I'm glad to hear you think it sounds Brazilian, I really like the sound of Brazilian music. I started to check out Luiz Bonfa.

Thanks, I'm gonna look how to move it to the relative major or subdominant, even those terms are helpful because I didn't know about them, so that will be a great start.

Yes, composing can be so challenging but so rewarding too!

Hi Harmonius,

Thank you! I'm glad you feel that way! That's interesting, I hadn't thought of brass but I can see how that could be good. I might give that a try. Thanks, I'm gonna try to rerecord it since I now notice I was off-tempo in some parts and I wasn't hitting some notes clearly enough, but I'll definitely share any improvements

Thank you Ingo Lee,

This looks like a great resource, good stuff for me to read and get more acquainted with. I'm really enjoying learning music theory as I need it, you know? I tried learning music theory in case I needed it before, but that made it harder for me to get motivated to learn it, now I have a reason to know it.
