English National Opera (ENO) are holding what they term as a MiniOperas competition.

There are three stages to the competition:-

Stage 1:   Writers/Authors are (were) encouraged to submit a 'script' (i.e. libretto) for a mini opera of about 5 to 7 minutes in length (based on one of the seed stories provided by ENO). That stage is now complete and 10 winning scripts were chosen to go forward to stage 2.

Stage 2:  Composers are invited to compose what ENO refer to as a 'soundtrack' using one (or more, if you are fecund) of the 10 shortlisted scripts/libretti.  This stage runs until 23rd July (composers submit an (MP3) of their composition via Soundcloud.  The Soundtrack Judge (Nico Muhly - http://nicomuhly.com) will pick a shortlist of 10 winning tracks  and these will go forward to Stage 3.

Stage 3: Film-makers are invited to create a film based on one of the shortlisted tracks from Stage 2    (runs from 6th August to 24th September). The Film Judge (Terry Gilliam - http://terrygilliamweb.com/) will pick a shortlist of 10 winning films.

Sometime in October (2012) 3 people will be selected (one from each stage) as 'overall winners' (?) and these have the option of being mentored for a year by either Jeremy Sams, Nico Muhly, or  Leo Warner (depending upon the stage winner).

Stage 2 is the most obvious stage that might interest composers on this site.

There are no age or nationality restrictions, and no fee for entering.
