I made the melody with the following rules:

*The musical practice of many centuries bears out the conclusion that melodic continuity is connected with predominantly stepwise motion.

*Leaps can prevent melodic continuity.

*In the interest of variety, we must employ some disjunct motion and leaps.

*Most cantus firmus contains 2 or 4 leaps.

*Skips of a 3rd can be continued in the same direction.

*When the leap is larger than a 3rd, a change of direction should follow. In most cases, this change of direction should be stepwise motion.

*The student should avoid 2 leaps of the same direction or more than two consecutive leaps of the same direction.

*More rules to go!!! he he he.

I know this melody is just a piece of shayt. I listen to good quality music everyday. I get frustrated that all the good music I listen to, doesn't translate for me towards making a good composition. However, I am following the rules and once I figure things out with melody, I will be greater than any great composers of the past.

  • I am so sorry. I did not intend to post 3 threads. I don't know what happened.

Yes, you got me to click on in. Fortunately, like the rest of the gimmickry and deception on this forum, you'll only get away with it once.

Instead of apologizing for posting the same topic three times, why don't you simply delete the other two? Correcting the mistake requires fewer steps and less effort than apologizing for it.

Your general observations about subject melody writing are generally true, but with no score, no specific request for advice, and no apparent knowledge of how to properly use this forum area, I can't imagine what assistance you seek here. Good moderators would get this thread (all three) off the board quick, but I think you've found a safe haven at CF, so have fun.

I don't know how to delete the posts.

    Are you serious?

Yes, I am serious. I believe I can be the greatest melodist of the 21st century. The current scenario of the music industry is already ripe for a great melodist to emerge out of nowhere. I understand my time is not yet, but I believe I can be a force to reckon with in the 2020's. Give me a few years, then I will make my rise. MARK MY WORD.

My melodies that I make are not to my liking right now. However, I always have a good taste in music and I listen to good quality music everyday. I also transcribe and discovering new melodies everyday. Not many people know, but I play guitar and I jam everyday. I have this software called Band in a Box and I spend my time jamming, trying to improve my melodic instincts.

You got me mistaken. I do listen to advice, but no one bothers to make a comment on my posts. Second, I have a score, but don't know how to post it. Third, you're treating me like I am trolling or some kind of a bad person. I am like any other serious composers in this forum. I am just melodically handicapped.

  • Jason,

       "MARK MY WORD."

    Duly noted.  Good luck..

  • Thanks for the instructions. As for the score, I realized that I saved this piece on Finale as an MP3 file and I didn't save the score. However, next time I have a new piece, I will use print screen, which is easy to do, and I will upload the score. Sorry for the inconvenience.

No inconvenience Jason, and I apologize for assuming (suspecting) the worst, first.

I am genuinely curious though. If you don't have a written record of your melody, and can't reproduce it from memory, what possible usefulness could come of any advice you might have received here?

No you don't understand. I thought I saved my work. I was caught up with converting it to mp3 file.

  • I did the thing where you listen to two of the same video at the same time starting at different times.  I like canons.

In all seriousness, have you considered adding some kind of harmony?  I guess it is kind of hard to do at this point, but either way.

Also, your text is in the quote boxes, which is confusing to me.  I don't know how to fix that though.
