Here are two books that no composer should be without. (These are viewable links to Google books). The 1st orchestration book explains the techniques, ranges of amateurs and professionals, limits of each instrument, and even the range of each string in the string section. The 2nd sister book of notation has all of a composer's writing rules with details. They are pocket size and can go anywhere with you. Don't rely on Sibelius or Finale to print your music proper, it's up to us to know how to communicate to the performer. Hope this helps......Happy composting!.......I mean composing!
