Christmas Carol Arrangement

Something I wrote for my wife's wind quintet.  They are going to play through it later this week, just wanted to throw it to the wolves beforehand, in case there are any glaring errors or WTF moments that having my head planted firmly up my left nostril may have blinded me to.  Note that the score is not as polished as the parts, because nobody will be reading from the score.  Just there for the critics convenience.

  • Thanks Bob.  A live group will be able to bring out the melody more and just have a better approach to dynamics than my mechanical robot slaves do, for sure.  Listening back, the main problem I have with this arrangement is that the mood isn't quite right, seems a bit too happy, or festive, what with the Brandenburg Concerto quotes and militaristic fanfares and such, but that's what happens when you have limited time to write something.  Gotta go with the first solution, no matter how daft.

  • Tombo,

It's somewhere between dreamy and ho ho ho.  You might try turning up the volumn on the lower parts, because the oboe and flute tend to mask all the nice rythms in the accompaniment.  Sweet piece, but I'm not ready for Christmas music yet.

That comment is somewhere between spot on and ha ha ha!  Very nicely put :)

If I don't get a recording with real instruments, I will heed your advice if and when I decide to whip my robot slaves into shape.  There's some strange out of tuneness in the oboe when it first takes up the melody, I'll maybe get some new VI DAW ultra reverb explosion machine and fix that up too.  Can't agree about the christmas music though, I'm always ready for that.

    Cheers!
