I have a Korg 01/Wfd and have been researching production software such as Sonar 8 Producer. I'm trying to figure out the least expensive (for now) way to compose and create professional recordings using my keyboard (if possible) and software (virtual instruments, etc). My operating system is XP Media (I know I have to upgrade to XP Pro or Vista). Would I be able to create and record professional tracks using the Korg, Sonar 8 and VSTs/Soft Synths? I know my questions are pretty basic for some of you, but after doing some reading on my own I understand more than I did at first, but I know there are gaps in my understanding. Also I've never worked with MIDI files. Previously I've used USB to record audio from my keyboard sequencer to my computer. Any clarifications would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Deborah

  • Thanks. I figured I was out of luck, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Ultimately, I want to get the Kurzweil PC3X (performance controller, I think it's called) because I also perform. But it's good to hear that I can get it done with a much less expensive controller. The reason I need to upgrade my operating system is because I purchased the computer about two years ago, and it came with Windows XP Media Center (which for some reason is not compatible with most recording and music-related software, such as Pro Tools, etc.).

Still it looks like I can do quite a bit for well under $1,000.

  • I'm new at this. Can someone explain to me what DAW and VST are?
