Untitled Duet for Piano and Viola

Started this discussion. Last reply by Ingo Lee Jul 3. 1 Reply

I started writing out the opening riff which I came up with on the piano. I decided to write the melody for viola because I own one and thought it would be fun to record the piece. The music I ended…Continue

This is the third and final movement of my strings piece. I've tried to apply things I've learned from posting the first two movements, so hopefully this doesn't need a lot, but any comments are…Continue

Movement No. 1

This is the first movement of the piece I have recently posted. I'm home today with a bad sprained ankle, so I took some of the ideas about dynamics I got from everyone here and edited the score.…Continue

"If you want to study video game music, these guys talk about it pretty extensively. I found their podcast on iTunes, but I'm sure it's also other places. http://www.supermarcatobros.com/podcast"

"Hi Matt -  I enjoyed this, it has some placid predictable parts that are offset by some spicier stuff that makes a nice package. One way to approach adding interest is to insert variations of rhythm or harmony (or both) and there are many ways…"

Untitled Duet for Piano and Viola

I started writing out the opening riff which I came up with on the piano. I decided to write the melody for viola because I own one and thought it would be fun to record the piece. The music I ended up writing quickly got out of hand though, so it might be a while of practicing (on both instruments) before I'm actually able to play it myself. The middle section came from something I wrote after reading about 12-tone melodies. The first part used all 12 tones, but then I started thinking about…See More

Matt Baker replied to Lucas Oliveira Krumenaur's discussion Hey guys, very easy melody to play arround (for newbes at least) come join the fun!
"Good point, Dane. .mscz files are the format that MuseScore uses. I thought it was the generic format, but I remember now that it's .xml, which can be read by (I presume) most notation software. Here is the .xml and a .pdf version. "

"I wouldn't say anything I do is "right," I just try to write what sounds good to me and then get advice on what errors I've made and how to make it better. One thing I've been aware of more lately (per advice from this…"

Matt Baker replied to Lucas Oliveira Krumenaur's discussion Fun violin melody with viola accompaining
"I like this melody. I didn't hear it without the cello part, but I imagine that was a big improvement; the cello seems to tie it all together nicely. One idea I had that might be cool would be to give the melody to one part (cello?) and have…"

Children's Song

I'm an elementary music teacher, and we're at the end of the school year. Last week I was playing guitar in a first-grade class and accidentally started writing a song with them about how they're about to be in second grade. It was kinda catchy so I went home and figured out how to add all the grades from my school to it and threw together a recording. I wrote out the recorder part based on what I played and am interested in any feedback on the accuracy of my transcription. Thanks!Matt…See More

"Fun! I like the melody you gave to the harmonica. With your quarter notes in the harmony and the snare drum, it undoubtedly sounds like a march, though I didn't necessarily get the feel of "marching band" (like halftime-show style, if…"

Matt Baker replied to Rick's discussion Soft The Snow
"I liked it. We've had a bit of a warm spell here lately, so I couldn't think snow; rather, it sounded to me more like the beach level in Mario Kart 64. (I don't know what that means other than I want to go swimming.) Nicely done."

About Me (Must include at least one paragraph of biographical information about you as a composer) - blank or minimal answers on this line will cause your request to be rejected. Include a link to your website if you have one.
I starting playing trumpet in 6th grade. In 12th grade I started playing guitar, which has been my main instrument for the past 18 years. I recently got a job as a music teacher, so I've been writing a lot of rearrangements of songs for recorder and other classroom instruments. I've written several pieces short for piano and a couple longer pieces for orchestra. I'm hoping to gain feedback on my pieces as well as to ask technical questions about notation and whatnot.
