I'm an elementary music teacher, and we're at the end of the school year. Last week I was playing guitar in a first-grade class and accidentally started writing a song with them about how they're…Continue
This is the third and final movement of my strings piece. I've tried to apply things I've learned from posting the first two movements, so hopefully this doesn't need a lot, but any comments are…Continue
This is the first movement of the piece I have recently posted. I'm home today with a bad sprained ankle, so I took some of the ideas about dynamics I got from everyone here and edited the score.…Continue
This is the second movement of a piece I will post probably in a few days. It was an attempt to make an orchestral version of, and develop, musical ideas I came up with on piano years before. I'm…Continue
"Good point, Dane. .mscz files are the format that MuseScore uses. I thought it was the generic format, but I remember now that it's .xml, which can be read by (I presume) most notation software. Here is the .xml and a .pdf version. "
"I wouldn't say anything I do is "right," I just try to write what sounds good to me and then get advice on what errors I've made and how to make it better. One thing I've been aware of more lately (per advice from this…"
"I like this melody. I didn't hear it without the cello part, but I imagine that was a big improvement; the cello seems to tie it all together nicely. One idea I had that might be cool would be to give the melody to one part (cello?) and have…"
I'm an elementary music teacher, and we're at the end of the school year. Last week I was playing guitar in a first-grade class and accidentally started writing a song with them about how they're about to be in second grade. It was kinda catchy so I went home and figured out how to add all the grades from my school to it and threw together a recording. I wrote out the recorder part based on what I played and am interested in any feedback on the accuracy of my transcription. Thanks!Matt…See More
"I liked it. We've had a bit of a warm spell here lately, so I couldn't think snow; rather, it sounded to me more like the beach level in Mario Kart 64. (I don't know what that means other than I want to go swimming.) Nicely done."
"Thanks, Dane, both for your comments and for taking the time to listen.
Throughout the whole piece, I tried to give players parts that I think I'd have fun playing. I bought a viola last summer because I wanted to learn how to play it (I play…"
"Well done! Basically a nice composition and from looking at the score it would sound lighter and airier when played live. Nice that you give the double bass some independence.
I had a small problem with the way you laid out the chords (vertically)…"
"I really like your key change from F into Ab. I didn't even realize you had started in a different key until I looked it over a second time; I think it was hidden by the sudden rhythm changes--which I liked.
One spot I didn't care for was…"
"That makes sense. When I looked at it closer, the original chord (Bar 3 Beat 4) was [E - F# - C natural] going to [C# - A - C#]--an inverted Cdim5 chord into a weak A major (two thirds and one root). I liked your suggestion, other than it…"
"I'm having a problem getting past the 4th beat of the 3rd measure. Not that anyone should care, but it's too much of an odd flavor too soon for me. With these instruments, that chord slapped me in the face, and I couldn't un-hear it…"
"Yes, really shaped up now. The REAL improvement would be to hear a live performance. Only a small alteration I can think of: when it goes fully pizz would be to have one instrument playing arco just to smooth it out a bit - but again, with live…"

I starting playing trumpet in 6th grade. In 12th grade I started playing guitar, which has been my main instrument for the past 18 years. I recently got a job as a music teacher, so I've been writing a lot of rearrangements of songs for recorder and other classroom instruments. I've written several pieces short for piano and a couple longer pieces for orchestra. I'm hoping to gain feedback on my pieces as well as to ask technical questions about notation and whatnot.
