Hello Emanuelle, what I mean by "tonal music with wrong notes" is that your piece is in a kind of perfect balance.....(tonality has not so much to do with pitch)...cluster music grouped in 4+4+4+4 do I experience as tonal. Because of the balance I hear your music as tonal. Of course no problem with tonality. And then we have the right "wrong" note and the wrong "right" note. And then we have virtuosity as a composing tool. I do not mean to be disrespectful but you invited me to say something about your music which I did....best, henk alkema
I will listen to your clarinet quartet.
Hello Emanuelle, I listened to your piano piece and what I heard was "tonal music with wrong notes". Is this what you aim for? I think it is not crazy enough, to decent and civilized....with due respect. Surprise me please by unexpected moves, illogical notes...etc
Hi Emmanuelle, I listened to your clarinet quartet, and a few things come to mind. These things are of course based on my own aesthetic and approach, so I don't know if they will have meaning for you. I believe you overuse chromatic scales, especially in the outer movements. Spans of unidirectional motion by half steps of one note value, unless specially colored by harmony, have no direction, no focus, no tendency, and are usually meter-fillers pretending to be melody. This then overflows into your harmony, which seems to lack purpose and direction. There is little tension, or relaxation, little departure or return. These two things seem at odds with your extremely regular phrasing. Your phrasing is my view into how you feel music, and it says to me that at present you feel music traditionally. (Please forgive me if that is presumptuous.) Why then avoid triadic harmony and diatonic melody? (Notice that I did not simply say "tonality", because key and form are not necessarily what I mean.) I understand that you don't want to sound old-fashioned. Like everyone, you want to have your own sound. If what you write is who you are, then by virtue of the fact that there's no one else like you, you will have your own sound. Strive for clarity and communication and let the rest happen by itself. In the course of that quest, things will occur to you that are better solutions than "standard" ones, and that's how you will find your true voice.
The song I just posted most recently was very aggravating (IBM is the one I am talking about).. It has well over 20 different tracks and I finally just "ended" the song. Without theory or any formal training at all, I really just got sick of trying to come into a way to get back to the main theme of the tune.
I only in the last few months got back into writing and recording. Its a challenge especially when there are so many great composers out there. so... so... many..... lol
has a way of making one feel less than special doesnt it? lol
good work on your clarinet comps. very different. :) keep it up!
Hi everyone. I'm new here so I'm still trying to find my bearings... I've managed to post a few compositions of mine. I would love to hear comments from you (positive and/or negative) if you have any.
Cheers ^^
