2009 so far has been sporadic. I was happy to get some more work last month writing music for a company that produces integrated marketing and promo commercials for local and regional TV markets. One of their commercials that I wrote music for last summer won a “Reggie” Award this year; a bronze in regional markets for budgets over $1,000,000.
A producer friend based in Nashville is writing songs for a new Disney cartoon. I played piano and wrote a string/horn arrangement for a promo of one of the tracks. It was all done over the “internets” of course.
I wrote another music track in February for a film & TV production company that I’d worked with in ‘08. They wanted music that sounded like a combination of a David Holmes song from Ocean’s 12, the Austin Powers theme, and the “Beat Goes On” song remix. It’s going to be used in a promo spot for the company itself.
I just finished up writing music for a live magic show traveling to Japan. The manager/planner, also a magician, is the son of a famous magician from the 70s. I did a re-arrangement of the theme music from his father’s TV specials. This was the second version; he wanted the track extended and he also wanted a more real sounding brass arrangement. I did use brass samples but this time I also played real trumpet ( ! ). I used to play trumpet in high school and college but I don’t really work at it anymore. I was able to record myself playing the melody before my lip gave out, haha. It actually turned out sounding really cool.
I spoke with a film director friend recently – he’s got a project. It looks like I’ll be writing music for another indie horror movie this summer. More details to follow
