Music Composers Unite!
Here are some resources that I posted in the chatbox, but decided to collect them in a blog post so that they don't get lost easily:
Melody writing: 7 steps to writing memorable melodies
Dealing with composer's block:
Instrument ranges, characteristics, articulations, in Flash video by the University of Indiana. This is a truly excellent resource for all orchestrators out there: it features videos of actual players playing their respective instrument across its entire range, with various dynamics and articulations, as well as some characteristic passages. Covers basically all standard orchestral instruments. If you have any interest in orchestral writing, this resource is a must-have!
Disclaimer: most of the above links (currently) all go to tutsplus.com, but I am not associated in any way to that site. It just so happened that I found the most useful information there.
