This music unfolds so quickly and so clearly in mind my that it is scary. Someone (Ravel?) must be playing an orchestra in heaven and streaming it down straight to my hipothalamus via an hyperwave beam or something. I feel like a machine that only has to write it down. Unfortunately (?) I don't have much time for that. Sometimes it keeps me from sleeping so I get up a write a bit. Then naturally I get a lack of sleep for days that ruins my life, but at least a bit of the celestial music is captured for human consumption. This particular piece is for full orchestra plus a jazz drum set and a couple other jazz percussion including vibraphone (not played yet) and maybe piano. And saxes take the place of the horns (or other winds) in the orchestra (maybe). The recording so far has only the opening and a few bars of the slow movement that segues. I'd very much appreciate any comments regarding:
The quality of the sound. I'm trying out technology, but I suspect my own ears are not very good at assessing this aspect of music, principally with it's my own music, because then I suspect I ear what it is not there (but in my mind). (This effect is what Simon calls "redundancy", right?) So, "lend me your ears." :-)
The opening melodic theme. Is it really inspired, memorable, hummable, or, again, is it just me? :-)
Harmony for that theme. I struggled to find it. And I'm not completely happy yet with the final, resolving, part. Alternatives?
The arrangement. Any comments whatsoever.
Key. I am keying this in C major (or A minor). (The theme alternates between the two.) A problem with this is that the contrabass will be a bit too high. I am considering balancing that with a tuba (which gos down to C1 I think). Or should I change it? (To E major?)
People with free time on their hands, I thank you.
