Lately, I've been listening to Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms, Hindemith's Mathis der Maler(Blomsted), Orff's Carmina Burana, and before sleep I usually listen to Pink Floyd's 'Time' for the inspiring guitar solo and awesome background arrangement. Last night I opened my eyes in the middle of the night, obsessed with various ideas for the beginning of the second movement of Equinox, which will be a more 'serious' section, whatever that means. I guess I'll be trying for something profound, relative to my past indulgences. ...Ha. Like the first movement, it will be based on the Em11th chord, a big reference to my blues-guitar past. Those famous 'modern' compositions I've been listening to do not satisfy me, but they do pique my imagination. I need satisfaction- the kind I've gotten from Mozart and Beethoven. I want to compose music that has a chordal movement similar to more complex Steely Dan compositions. Anyway, that's a starting point, right?
