Music Composers Unite!

Ok, I will (at last) be heading to Steven Scott Smalley's world-famous orchestrator's workshop in Manhattan this coming Saturday.

I have very high hopes for this course. Just yesterday I bought the new "Lego Batman" game for the Wii and the music is an arrangement of the Danny Elfman theme. It struck me that although the theme is pretty cool, the real strength of that music is in the amazing orchestration and how the theme is developed and used by the various instruments. As Mr Smalley was one of the orchestrators on that soundtrack, hopefully I will get some insight into how this music was approached. I have read online somewhere that apparently the theme is developed in the same way as the opening theme from the original Journey to the Centre of the Earth. Given that this was composed by Bernard Herrmann (a massive influence on Danny Elfman) this seems possible however I've not had chance to fully explore this yet.

Then I'm also looking forward to exploring the arrangement for Jerry Goldsmith's wonderful Star Trek music. This is the kind of music that attracted me to film scores in the first place.

Anyway, the obvious question is:

Is anyone else from the forum going?

Well I had to cancel unfortunately as there was a family crisis that needed me back at home.

The good news is that a friend of mine brought back the scores and his notes for me.

Awesome! I went in la a few years ago. I'm told that it is free if you have already been, but i can't make it this sat. The crappiest part is that you are definately a composer that I would love to meet! You will love it!

I attended last October, and wish I could sit in again!!! Have a great time in the course, and enjoy NY while you're at it! The course rocks, the city rocks... you'll have a blast, no doubt. The massive amount of course materials are a goldmine as well... lots of stuff to review for months/years after...

My wife and I just took possession of our house last week... there's a really well built little shed in the back, and I'm looking over your studio building blog and thinking... hmmmmmmm... :)

Cheers

Adrian
