Music Composers Unite!

With all of the various music and groups that are up on my playlist; I figured it should be explained. So herein lies the explanation.

The New South Jazz Orchestra (www.nsjo.com - www.cdbaby.com/nsjo ) is the big band in which I try to manage. To say it is "my bigband" is technically correct, but without the effort, musicianship and sacrifice the guys in the group gave for this project to happen, I can not say it is "my bigband" so, it's the big band for which I compose, arrange, and manage. Other composers in this forum are also members of the The NSJO - Chris Gordon, Chad Fisher, Mace Hibbard, Jimmy Bowland, Mart Avant (are all world-class composers/arrangers themselves and have been invited to the forum). Tracks 1 through 5 in the playlist are from the New South Jazz Orchestra CD. 1) Harlem Chaser - Comp: Shane Porter

2) Stompin' at the Savoy - Chick Webb/Benny Goodman - Arr: Shane Porter

3) Get Up Stand Up - Bob Marley - Arr: Shane Porter

4) Testimony - Impromptu Composition by Shane Porter (Piano) and Gary Wheat (Tenor Sax)

5) Got The Spirit - Slide Hampton - Arr: Dan Western

6) That Something Special - Comp: Shane Porter - recorded recently in Muscle Shoals, Al. with an all-star cast of R&B Rhythm Section & Horn Players.

Tracks # 7& 8 (Hello Young Lovers & Cascavelo) were recorded at a concert that was a Tribute to Mr. Steve Sample. A concert of many of his arrangements and compositions. The performing ensemble was a group called The Tuscaloosa Horns. Based out of Tuscaloosa Alabama, this group predominantly attended the University of Alabama and gained our jazz education from Mr. Steve Sample, jazz director at the University of Alabama for 30+ years.

9) Indigo Doll - one of my first compositions.

10) Doxy - This chart was recorded by a band in Orlando for the Jalen/Matrix Publishing 2005 Jazz Catalog - it is available for purchase at www.jwpepper.com - or - www.jalenpublishing.com

11) National Emble Swing - This is a swing take on a the National Emblem march. It was commissioned by FJH Publishing company in 2001 and is also available for purchase on www.jwpepper.com

12) Luck Be A Lady - I got my publishing start in Marching Band arranging. This is one of my first marching band arrangements - performed by the Troy State University - Sound of the South.

13) You've Made Me So Very Happy - Also another Troy State University performance.

14 & 15) Early & Late News Theme - these were composed for a South Alabama News Channel - These two themes were nominated for Addy's in 2002.

16) Alabama Council for the Fine Arts did a feature Interview with Me about the New South Jazz Orchestra. The interview touches on what the Music Scene is (or is not) like in the public schools today & possibities of what can be done to assist in fixing it. The NSJO is predominantly filled with Jazz Educators/Clinicians.

If you have any questions about anything on the playlist - please post it and I'll answer them as soon as I see it.

I hope you enjoyed everything you heard! I wish you many blessings on your own musical career.

Shane!
