Road Trip v2

With a little luck, today should be the day that I finish version 2 of the mix...


On a separate note, I have rediscovered an old composition from 10 years ago and somehow I was able to open it in Sonar X1, my DAW. The tune has a lot of potential- the lead guitar track sounds good! It'll probably be an instrumental, but maybe I can design a melody for a lead vocal.

September 10th, 2011

I spent most of the day re-mixing the song, 'Road Trip'. I added a little more compression to the elec bass. I created a new drum sub-mix, made sure it was nice and bright. I separated the two kick drum tracks, so I can easily adjust them without messing with the rest of the drums. I also adjusted the panning of a few of the tracks. I re-did the reverb on the drums. They sounded too far back. I added more compression to the vocals, for a smoother flowing sound. Next… Continue

EQ'ing a Kick Drum?

A difficult mixing task is the problem of separating the frequencies of a kick drum from the frequency range of the electric bass. I've been placing the kick drum lower than the elec bass in the frequency spectrum. Using drum replacement software (in Sonar) has allowed me to transfer the audio kick track, to a MIDI track, which I then use to trigger a sample. I've been using  a kick drum sample in my D4 sound module. It has very strong low frequencies, around 43 hz.…
