Greetings from a Musical Mind

Hello Composers' Forum members!

This is my first ever blog.

I have been trained in music for 10 years now. I started by playing the Bb trumpet from 5th grade up through high school. I have been composing music for three years now, though it has only been recently that I have been publishing with full rights to my work. I have yet to get a recording done by a real musician, but I am working with a friend to do just that at the moment.

I feel that…

Aaron Copland's "Music for a Great City"

Ok, so I was doing some research on the Stan Kenton recording of "City of Glass." The piece takes a rather dark look at New York City. While doing my reseach, I came across a piece by Aaron Copland called "Music for a Great City." Have you heard it? I am sorry to say that after studying Copland for almost 20 years, I had not even heard of this piece.

It is amazing. It is one of those gems, much like Copland's "Letter from Home," which are too often overlooked or altogether…

Museum music

At this time, one term appears more and more strongly in my consciousness - the term "museum music". From a contemporary point of view, it can be defined as the music of those composers who have decided to run from the current time ,or even the recent past time, and whose musical compositions are, thus, fit to hand in directly to a “music museum”. It is as if these composers were trying to reconstruct a type of music that is of…

Composing with Styles and Genres

Hello all, I am interested in corresponding with other composers who engage in composing with styles and genres. THis is the subject of my doctoral study where I differentiate between poly-stylism which is a common enough occurence, and poly genre music that gives two or more genre SIGNALS in the music. I am also looking at how the composer is both product of global cosmospolitan society (emerging) and a contributor to heritage. My new compositions demonstrate the practice that becomes a field… Continue

Conferences in L.A.

Hello Everyone,

I'm thinking of attending Music in Media Interactive conference or the Hollywood Reporter/Billboard Film and T.V. Music conference in L.A. this year, but before I buy my tickets, I was wondering if anyone has previously attended either conference and if I could get some feedback (What was the format like? Were the discussions/panels helpful? Networking opportunities? etc...) I'm interested in gaining experience as music supervisor for film/t.v., so I thought this… Continue

Live Messenger

Hi!

Taking time to say a hello to the Forum! I've been listening to a lot of the wonderful music uploaded to the site. I have been working on editing instrumental parts and have the browser open listening to a Forum composer as I do the tedious, time-consuming work.

I use Windows Live Messenger and it is generally up and running while I'm sitting at the computer. The email address is: kcorchestrator-2@att.net . If the software is showing me as "Busy" please go ahead and… Continue
