Caffeinated Piano

Here are three short pieces (under 4 minutes total) inspired by techno - very rhythmically accurate, but with a lot of dynamic control such as you'd get on a midi keyboard.  I can't play these yet but I'm working on it.

Bassoon Sonata

Recently, I received this message on facebook from Principal Bassoonist of the San Francisco Symphony, Stephen Paulson.  It goes without saying that I am flattered and excited :)

Getting Close to Finishing 'Road Trip'

A few days ago I finished tracking, which means all of the instruments have been recorded. Now I'm tweaking each individual track. Each part might have anywhere from 1 to 4 tracks. For example a mono guitar part might require a separate track just for reverb or delay. Or another version of the track might be heavily compressed and then mixed with the original track for fullness. I've finished the lead vocal tracks, except for reverb. I've finished the bass track which… Continue

'Road Trip'

Today's task at my DAW: fill out the center instrumental break section, by adding vibes to the existing tracks- (bass, drums, a few lead guitar fills, and Rhodes elec piano). The section is not very long, but as usual, it took multiple takes and quite a lot of improvisation to come up with some appropriate/usable riffs. The vibes are now done for this section, so after dinner I'll adjust the timing to make sure it isn't too sloppy. So far, the tune has a kewl vibe.… Continue

Why does listening to music have to be so complicated?

To answer this question, you ave to understand what I go through just to turn on the itunes while i slave away playing crossword puzzles online.  For me, it is like choosing a paint color for a room in my house.  "What if I pick the wrong one, and then I am stuck with it?", or "I don't want to pick a color that is too much like the rest of the colors in the house."  You may be wondering "What are you talking about?  Just turn on a different song...", or "Who cares what you listen to, listen…

How to get a film scoring gig - make the film!

Opportunity comes from strange and unexpected places.

What is the essence of opportunity, really?  Is it that first gig with a contract for a movie that other people will see in theaters?  You bet.

Maybe, though, it's that obscure off-in-the-corner opportunity where you get to see what it's really like.  Where you get to really let out the stops because you know you can fail and it'll be OK.  Maybe it's just rationalizing that the film you are scoring will…

New Samples! Vibes...

In the near future I'll be testing my new sample library from Acousticsamples.

Looking forward to using these vibraphone samples in my recent recordings that are in the works...

MY new song: Peaceful Path

This is my new song. This is a piano song. I have only added some soft choir in the background (my voice) and I have tried to add some strings/glockespiel/pad.

I am quite pleased with the mixing of this song. I hope you like the song :)
