Music for video

I am new to the Composer's Forum - so I am still trying to figure out how it works, etc.

I write music for video, and actually shoot my own video as well. I'm developing a style with these primary instruments: piano, accordion, guitar, bass.

My latest project is here on Vimeo:

My other video/music projects can easily be found in the…

Pondering my options...

I'm at somewhat of a loose end it seems. I have finished my symphonic poem: "Son Coeur Est Un Luth Suspendu" based on the short story, The Fall of The House of Usher by Edgar Allen Poe. So now I'm looking around at my notebooks and the such like wondering where to go from here... I have two movements of a suite written and some other bits and pieces (most of a prelude for a string quarter, but I don't much like it). I know in my heart that I should really put composition on hold and focus on my… Continue

Creating realistic legato strings with samples

Creating Realistic Legato Strings With Samples

Hi everyone,

I get a lot of requests from people asking about how to get good legato strings whether they need to buy LASS, what reverbs they need, etc. In the end I thought it would be a good idea to simply write a blog about the principles behind getting good legato strings and let people try out the the techniques and see for themselves. I'm really focusing on slower…

20 April 2010

Well, quite a reasonable amount has changed since my last post! I am no longer living in Glasgow, I have moved to Surrey - south of London - where I will hopefully be continuing my education this year.
I have continued to compose works for the Rednote Ensemble, and have just finished two pieces for 3 violins, which I have submit for their concert on the 24th of May in Edinburgh's Traverse Theatre.
I have also recently completed a short piece for string orchestra, which will be…

Looking towards fall: considering taking on a "Finale intern" to help with publishing work.

I don't know if any of you younger guys are interested in what I'm about to offer, but here's the situation in broad strokes:

My current editor /Finale guru , Steve Sample ( also a member here ) has begun to get very busy with his own personal projects, and has requested a furlough from helping me with my recording and publishingwork in the coming year. Since my familiarity with Finale has heretofore been almost totally with thewriting and inputting side, my knowlege of the printing… Continue

Rock River Rhapsody

My cousin, Laurie, was the person who encouraged me to get back into music and composition. This piece was written for her in memory of our times spent at her place on the Rock River in southern Wisconsin a long time ago.

She likes the piece and that pleases me.

This is the last piece I composed before my hard drive died and I lost all my working files of my music. I do have a score for this piece in .pdf but it's not too tidy. But I could recreate the piece if…

I wrote a new article about the relation between social media and composers. What is helpful? What you should avoid? What could you gain out of it? Hope you enjoy!
