Stuff Schoenberg Said, Part 2

The big question: why should anybody care what Schoenberg said? I have no answer yet, I'll think about that one.  But anyways, here are a few more quotes from the book Style and Idea.  The even bigger question of "why should anybody care what Tombo Rombo thinks about what Schoenberg said?"  has also yet to be answered. Oh well!

What distinguishes dissonances from consonances is not a greater or lesser degree of beauty, but a…

Collected Quotes from Arnold Schoenberg

Having recently finished reading Style and Idea, a collection of Arnold Schoenberg's writings on various topics, music related and otherwise, I would like to share some of his ideas I underlined while reading, particularly those that are pertinent to composition, even more specifically those topics that are often covered in this forum.

On "electrical instruments":

...the misguided spirit of industry...does not…

Whats your motives?

I feel one of the greatest questions with composition is what's your ultimate goal in music. Is it to move people, express a pain or feeling, make money, show people a little bit of what your world, love making, etc. I personally feel with most of my music is I want to bring people on a journey they haven't experienced yet; show the changes of moods I find most beautiful. Please share with me, I would love to hear.

Creating a new instrument in Kontakt 4! Wish me luck.

This is all about my Alesis D4 drum module. It's dying. It has a particular kick drum sample that I use in most of my recordings. I often replace the actual kick drum of the player's drum kit, with this particular sample. It has a nice low tone that hits you at a gut level.

The problem is that the D4 is dying. Its LCD menu screen is becoming unreadable. Note parameters are mysteriously changing to unchosen samples, mono to stereo, added reverb, etc.

So, I need to salvage this…

Music for Art Exhibit: Memoir of the (20th) Century

The music I just uploaded was written in 1980 for a large art exhibition in London titled Memoir of the Century -- by visual artist Felix Topolski http://www.topolskicentury.org.uk/  We worked together from 1978-1980 to envision a "sound-scape" for his Memoir.

I developed this music to match the architectural aspects of the murals as spatial/architectural music -- similar to the concept Giovanni Gabrieli used when he wrote for…

Stylistic Unity: Who Needs It?

Organicism.  Compositional integrity.  Motivic development.  Logical arguments.

Hogwash!

Ok now I do realize that blah blah blah and so on and so forth so don't even go there.  LOL

When I listen to who is perhaps the granddaddy of thematic unity and development, the master of all masters, J.S. Bach, I am delighted, awed, amazed, and very quickly bored.  It's as if he made model after model of the most exquisite cuckoo clocks the world has ever…

A simple but effective reverb setup

Hi all,

I know I know it's been ages but I thought I'd quickly throw out a blog on how I set up my reverb for orchestral mixes. I used to use a really, really complicated method but of late I've settled on something fairly simple and straightforward that I feel works and gives a realistic result and uses fairly modest CPU.

I'm literally only going to use QL Spaces for this and we're going to set up some sends.

So as a starting point we might as…

Who Are Your Heroes of Music?

We all have different combinations of musical influence. I take my dose of Beethoven in the morning and Mozart in the evening. After listening to enough of them, I've worked out which sounds better or what have you. But, it didn't start off as simply listening to all their music. I've gotten to know the people behind the music, and some of them have become my heroes.

As a person on the autism spectrum, I cling to the possibility that great men in musical history were also…

DO'NT BOTHER LEARNING HOW TO COMPOSE

What do jimi Hendrix charlie Parker john lennon john Coltrain bob Marley and duke Ellington have incommon? they where all self taught or at least not taught in insitutions, infact most of the important and infuencial musicians of modern music, where self taught, and l beleive this is one of the keys to their greatness, most people who study how to compose loose some degree of creativity because of there studies.the primory reason for this is the blocking of the subconscious creative process by… Continue

What is Classical Music?

I see the term "classical music" used with varying intent so I thought I would ask what the term means, or what you think it means.

Is classial music that body of work written in Europe between 1750 and 1830? Is it music that is kept alive because of performing traditions? Does the meaning of "classical music" change with the location of the music? Are Japanese  Gagaku and Persian Radif examples of classical music? By "classical" do we mean music that has an intent other than…
