Music Composers Unite!
Just a few thoughts on the mixing subject. I'm no expert, but after many hours of experimentation, I've come to the conclusion that it's helpful to establish sub-mixes:
drum tracks (without kick drum)
electric bass guitar
kick drum
submix of the remaining instrument tracks
optional vocal track
The creations of these submixes greatly simplifies the mixing process. It makes it much easier to produce a final stereo mix.
I often create many…

Biographie

Hi all. What's new? two new effects pedals for my guitar and bass:
BBE Sonic Stomp
BBE Opto Stomp
I will report back to you, after I do some recording with these gizmos that I must point out: manufactured in the USA. They were $100 each. I read online reviews and acquired them to possibly improve the sound/recordings of my Fender Jazz Bass. Also curious to see how they might improve my electric guitar tone.
On the recording front,…

This was a very exciting and challenging day or two – particularly as I was using sordino strings combined with the LA Scoring Strings full library – and I wanted a particular sound (in my head I was thinking of John Barry meets Tron Legacy for some reason). I used VSL for the woodwinds, and VSL and Project Sam for the brass.
I added some basic choir ‘ahs’ from Symphony Of Voices, piano, some synth fx, synth bass (I always feel that a little synth bass or electric bass tucked way…

A jazz pianist and I had this discussion tonight: when is it just too much, or too little? My friend is a gifted artist; he can handle dissonances well, by ear.
I always wonder why jazz and classical music have mistrusted one another in the concert hall. The conservatories are worse: their theory tracks are completely different.
But this not about that difference. This is about interest. When does it get boring? Anything, really. Any music.
For me, when I am hopelessly…

I've uploaded a piece I was working on recently. It started as a simple melody played while testing new VST plugins. Few days later I got an idea to begin with a random noise patterns which then were morphed so the main theme would appear. I used that simple 'test' melody to start my little experiment. I must say that it wasn't as easy as I though it would be and I didn't achieve the result I had in mind at the beginning. Anyway, I liked it!

I got a copy of the English translation of Tchaikovsky's book for Christmas and I was surprised (but happy) to find some comments and tips that I never learned in my harmony courses in college. It's all fairly basic, but anything I can add to my own technique is a good thing.

I have moved from Grageband to Logic Pro 9 and I expect it to make a huge impact on my music. Now I have really professional equipment and NO EXCUSES! Right now I'm in the process of programming my own sounds on all the great synths. I will then remaster some old stuff and start working on new songs. I'm having fun! I'll be back as soon as I have something to show : )
