Lying in bed, late last night. Headphones and a pillow. Weather Report was not a forecast on TV, but an iPod tune called 'Palladium'. Gotta love it- crispy, punchy, dramatic, a simmering stew of alternating powerful melodies and perfect improvisations. Just about as good as it gets. Pulsing with life. Album- 'Heavy Weather'.

Hello fellow Composerinos
I've begun a new blog "on music composition and production, filmmaking, and creativity"
Have a look and see what you think - much more content to come! The first post details, with audio examples, the always interesting journey of being a hired gun, balancing compromise and conviction, and trying to please everyone - 1 clip, 3 versions of the score!…

I am an independent musician with a deep found affinity and love for new age music and all forms that it is varied from or that vary from it including melodic trance, Celtic, light jazz, dance, good techno, and so much more.
It all started in 1986 when I was visiting my father. We were driving up the rough and rugged logging roads of the British Columbia coastal mountains in his old beat up Isuzu. He pulled an audio cassette out of the console and popped it into the tape deck. The…

With the economy in shambles, and everyone trying to scramble to "take cover" from the job loss and the uncertainly of the future, I begin to wonder if I'm in the right place at the right time. By this I'm meaning being a music major. I keep looking for a prgram that will give me the better hand in composition, even though I fail to realise that I'm already there. Yes, it could be enough that I'm studying techniques of classical and 20th century composition, but at the same time, I feel there…

Ok, so it's been a while and I've been very busy but I thought I'd try and drop in a quick blog post about writing action/fight music.
A brief overview
Lots of action scenes take place accompanied by major themes from a film or even background songs. This is not really the kind of action music I'm looking at here. What I'm discussing in this post is classic action music - frantic, dissonant and often quite bewildering. Think of everything from Jerry Goldsmith's work to…

The first trailer of a 2D animation project I'm involved in just got released. It features lots of music I've composed for the project including a high impact trailer cut. It's completely noncommercial which means that I'm doing the score voluntarily. To put it as simple as possible: It's done for the love of writing a filmscore for something truly inspiring. Maybe I should mention that the director and animator is just 19 years old as well.
Direction/Art/Animation :…

It was a different time-- a brief stint of artists 'cleaned up', if you will-- what I mean is, while it was my control room the talent flowing through were watching what they eat and what they put into their veins... it was mineral water and vegetable trays, fresh lox and bagels, hard to come-by herbal teas and high-dollar imported water. I only heard the stories of mounds of coke on the producers' desk about the years prior: the continual tweaking that became commonplace in the studio…

Hey All. I'm new to the composer's forum. I'm a student and composition major at Cal State San Bernardino. I will be posting my first composition to the forum and my page next week: "Such a Beautiful Moment." It is a religious text praising the moment that the Lord is coming in the time of revelation. It's for alto and tenor vocals and mostly keyboard based instruments: Synthesized strings, acoustic piano, harminium, Odes Maternot (a synth instrument) and percussion. It's going to be presented…

You see, I had it nice. I rented a fantastic house in the historic district mere blocks away from the most incredible control room attached to one of the very coolest tracking spaces I've been in... not a typical tracking space found in Nashville, USA, this one was just the right size to accommodate a 5 piece rock band-- not gobs of session players like the other World Class Spaces in or around Music Row. You see, a typical country tracking session has the five plus fiddle, pedal steel, wurly,…

Hi,
Please have a listen to my latest track called I spy (working title and not really a very good one!).
This is the first mixdown, I'll probably tweak it a bit but have a listen anyway.
Please add me as your friend too, I'm a bit lonely at the moment!

How did I know that on that night, my obsession which would ultimately put me right here where I am today, would begin? --an obsession that would, in retrospect, lead me to the conclusion that I just plain don't have the moxy to thrive in the music industry as a component of commercial record production? I stumbled on the song. A song that was once right there-- right under my nose two years earlier-- a time when I was too busy living the life of the RIM student to notice that there was a…

Lately, I've been listening to Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms, Hindemith's Mathis der Maler(Blomsted), Orff's Carmina Burana, and before sleep I usually listen to Pink Floyd's 'Time' for the inspiring guitar solo and awesome background arrangement. Last night I opened my eyes in the middle of the night, obsessed with various ideas for the beginning of the second movement of Equinox, which will be a more 'serious' section, whatever that means. I guess I'll be trying for something profound,…

Hey Folks:
Check out my latest composition, "Paul's Theme." Composed in Finale and Seqenced and mixed in Sonar. Libraries used: East West Silver, Edirol.
Please leave comments. Any ideas on how to get the sustained trumpets and strings to sound less "electronic"?
Thanks!
Jon
