Profile Information

What have you composed for? Or what medium do you work around?
television, Orchestra, Small Ensemble, Big Ensemble, Contemporary Ensembles
What is your favorite genre or style of music?
It's easier to answer what my favorite genres aren't. But for the most part - I'm a music lover. You can find good music in every genre, some of it is just harder to find than others.
Is music your main income source?
Yes!
Where do you live?
Chattanooga, Tn & Tuscaloosa, Al.
About Me:
I'm a professional trumpet/piano player and have been for years. I'm also a composer/arranger in various genres. I am beginning to incorporate virtual instruments into my compositions. This combination of real and virtual I'm hoping will allow me to begin to master the creative gift that has been given to me. Doing this seems to provide an unlimited amount of possibility, as well as accuracy and still have feel and soul (soul - very important). Music has to involve human element or it's not music, it's mechanics.

I'm the Assistant Director of Bands, Trumpet Prof. and Jazz Program director at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. I'm entering my third year and am very happy with the progress of the jazz program and my students. I'm always looking for new ways to inspire them and am open to suggestion and discussion on that topic - if you have anything, please feel free to send it my way! I also perform with many different groups on a regular basis. I've put up a blog entry that tells you a bit about my playlist.

The New South Jazz Orchestra is the big band that I humbly put together with the gracious assistance from all of the fine musicians in the group. I am predominantly the composer/arranger for the group, however, many of the musicians involved in the group are also world class composers/arrangers. The band consists of mostly jazz educators from the Southeast region of the U.S. Everyone in the group is involved in Jazz Education in some way. Performing is extremely important to us, but teaching the art of what it is that we do is also extremely important. It is America's truest artform - and our country gladly rejects it. It's not because it's bad music, it's because of the lack of jazz education. The majority of the folks that make up that band have been Students, at one point or another, of Mr. Steve Sample (also on this forum). If you don't know much about him - I highly recommend getting to know him - he's a musical encyclopedia and legacy.

A few other things about me - I try to be as normal as possible, knowing that musicians are just not normal folks :o)
1) I will venture into composing for anything
2) When I have a musical idea - I make it happen - no matter how long it takes
3) I Love to share ideas/thoughts on musical stuff.
4) Although I'm a Professor - I think "academics" has done more to hurt music than it has done to help. Education is much more important than academia! When academians spend time trying to explain to each other why we're so important - then we lose our audience - the regular folks - the musically ignorant - the people that enjoy music at it's core, which is how it makes them feel, a true emotional response. Those people do not care that a "1-5-7 set" is a major triad in normal form! (yeah, I know what I'm talkin' about!)

I could "lecture" on that for hours, so i'll stop here. I wish you all well in your musical ventures - and if you ever need any help - please feel free to ask. Sometimes I charge - sometimes I don't :-)

INFO ABOUT MY PLAYLIST

With all of the various music and groups that are up on my playlist; I figured it should be explained. So herein lies the explanation.

The New South Jazz Orchestra (www.nsjo.com - www.cdbaby.com/nsjo ) is the big band in which I try to manage. To say it is "my bigband" is technically correct, but without the effort, musicianship and sacrifice the guys in the group gave for t

Where do I start? You guys killed Lovers and Cascavelo. I'm embarrassed that I didn't think to let a drum solo come FIRST on Cascavelo--loved it. Great soloists but the piano was a little too busy for my tastes. Who is playing guitar, Tom Wolfe, maybe?
I checked out your other things and can truthfully say, my work is done here. You are not only writing great charts but now they have good endings. I applaud your variety too.
Keep on keepin' on!
