I have sensed that there is subtle discrimination on these forums towards self-taught composing students such as myself. Today's forum interactions did not help this. So I want nothing more to do…Continue

How to fail a kid at Music: a User's Guide.

Started this discussion. Last reply by Kristofer Emerig Nov 8, 2016. 3 Replies

For awhile I have wanted to put together a guide on how music educators and music curriculum designers can do maximum damage to a kid's ability to enjoy, and get ahead with, music. I have  decided to…Continue

Piano composers with unique styles

Based on the somewhat disconcerting realisation that I can't find my own style of composing solo piano - long strings of unresolved suspended chords and pure colour of passages of whole/long notes…Continue

Is there a book for intermediate level composing?

Started Oct 30, 2016 0 Replies

As of a few days ago I am beyond the beginner stage. I've done a 10 minute piano competition. I've changed keys. I've changed time sigs. I've used a lot of dynamics marks. I'm very happy sincerely…Continue

"Myself, I have taken the album route, but at this point feel I'm good enough for any competition. So now (at 63) I'm entering competitions. In my life there have been experiences that especially contributed to my growth as a composer. One…"

"In my view, you need to study three things. 1 Theory. All of composition is based on it. 2 Play an instrument. I don't know if you play anything now, but I think playing an instrument helps develop what musical is all about. 3 Then study…"

"The answer to your Schoenberg question won't be found in any book on harmony. You'll have to get more advanced with music notation. I strongly recommend Elaine Gould's Behind…"

"I find it interesting that there are plenty of composers submitting works here who have no music training at all. And their music is pretty good. This is why I said earlier that music education is over rated. That is, depending on what you want to…"

About Me (Must include biographical information about you as a composer):
I am learning Sibelius and FL Studio. I'm returning to formal music study as an adult. The last time I studied music was at high school in 1988!! I'm starting the AMEB exams [ Australian Music Education Board]. I also have some good music theory books that I am working through. So I can guarantee that I will be composing. Just not this minute! I have read some threads of the forum such as the one that people should not insult each other. I agree. No insults! I like to do music DAW experiments. For instance I get my own samples such as cat noises and uses them to make new sounds. Last week I took a cat noise and in FL Studio made a cat laser beam noise.

I am an adult returning to music. The last time that I studied music formally was at high school in 1988. That may be a record for this forum! Right now I am learning Sibelius and working through music books by Gordon Spearritt. I would like to have a go at the AMEB exams [ Australian Music Education Board]. These days the exams are offered online which is a huge improvement upon when I was at school! I am also learning FL Studio.

Anyway, I have knocked together something in…
