Serialized Rhythms

Serializing all musical parameters, including duration is part of the 1960s movement called Total Serialism. Google for Stockhausen and you will find more information....

Three Bagatelles for Wind Quintet--Movement II. Lively

This was awesome. Great use of articulation and I like how you throw the melody all around the ensemble. Nice contrasting sections as well. Performance-wise, one can the player struggling technically…

Three Bagatelles for Wind Quintet (movement three)

An excellent listen;there's lots to like about this music. You write wonderfully for the ensemble, which isn't an easy thing to do. All the instrumental lines suit the instruments and you make good u…

The War for Fire

This is interesting music. I like the angular intervals in the trombone. The second second was a nice foil to the 7/8 opening. I think more could be done in the way of performance practice. Open/clos…

Track #3 "It Hurts To See You Go"

Larry Alexander School of Music.. not nice. I liked parts of it, but found some of the intervals and progressions a little awkward. The constant texture could perhaps be alleviated by a contrasting s…

What (if any) Music notation software do you use?

I use Notion...and quite adore it. The current samples do sound good, and sound great when they are massaged via notation. I.E. hairpins, articulations. and dynamic profiles. Notion3(the 3rd version)…

Interlocking Voices - eg clarinets between flute 1 and 2 - what works well ?

Woodwinds work well in many many ways. I don't think there's any real rules, except to make sure that the Oboes aren't too low and hence quacky and that the Flutes are also not too low as they don't…

Do you think it helps/ is important for composers to carry on practising their instruments ?

An interesting discussion. I came from a 'performance' background. I think it's important to maintain a physical connection to music making; it can only help with the creative connection of composing…

All makes sense. Thanks for sharing some of your process.

Thanks, I was wondering how you managed a 21 note matrix--quarter tones. Sounds like you are working in total serialism to me. Are you serializing the dynamic profiles as well?

a new piece for your dissection pleasure.

Worked for me. A nice sonic soundscape. I like the quarter tones, and the 'prepared piano' type of sound. I'd be interested in reading the theory behind it.

Nagasaki Aftermath (Angst)

I liked this. It is not just ambient, but has a nice emotional feeling. I liked some of the chords and their spacings.

Condemnation towards computer generated music (Sample libraries and such)

Lots of good points made on both sides, but the realist in me tends to go with the practicality of notation software. Looks around, nope..no world class orchestra in my garage awaiting my latest mast…

What about musical education?

Hmm..I really think it depends upon a lot of things. Most important is the genre. If you are writing for a rock band, then likely no. If you are composing symphonic music, then most definately yes. E…

Can anyone do this?

I think it's pretty simple: if you write music, you are a composer!

performed sequence vs notation sequence

Two thumbs up for Notion... I've been using it exclusively since May 2005.

About Me:
I am an orchestral composer. I use computer software for composition, performance and playback. I don't use a midi keyboard or a keyboard of any kind for composition as I find this distracts me. I work in notation;the process from ideation to final product all takes place in my brain and computer. I'm currently using a new composition software program to help me to realize my sound palette: Notion http://www.notionmusic.com/
Stylistically, my music is quite diverse and includes tonal-traditional to extra-tonal and experimental. Most of the music I am composing these days tends to be rather traditional and tonal in its approach. Feedback most welcome...

Currently listening to Wintertide...kudos on the balance achieved with use of the Piano to ground the song. You deliver a delicate architecture and noble message.

John- Interesting works..I really enjoy the variety as well as the writing style...I was wondering what your opinion of Notion was vs Finale or Sibelius...I apply a very similar style in my composition for piano works.

Your music excites my passion to write. (read: I will steal ideas from you) gorgeous melodies and the percussive woodwindy colors with lots of larger intervals at times. I'm amazed at the quality you get without a keyboard. I will check out this Notion software. Do you use third party samples with it, or are you using what comes with it?

One question: I find that I write FOR my samples. If my samples dont' "play" a part well then I don't write it, as it will soudn false and the director will cringe.

Do you have that kind of obstacle with Notation?

Thanks for your music. It made me happy to find it.

Well i IS kind of a very fitting soundtrack (better than the sequences of pictures my mind create) to a film about animals, as the name suggests.

Feels alive as is, and i have no complaints on the production. Sounds professional indeed :)

I will come back, to listen on more occasions :)
