Salvin Cransby replied to Cornelis Jordaan's discussion I'm new here, judge me not by what my music does!
"Hi Cornelis. I like this piece. It has some minor pentatonic sound and some whole-tone sounds and then some sophisticated, dissonant developments."

Salvin Cransby replied to Norman Tran's discussion A certain chord that mystifies me.
"I like the chords 7b5 and 7b13. I like when FACC becomes FBCD (dimb9?) Sounds and functions of chords change depending on their surroundings though, so sometimes basic chords sound amazing."

About Me (MUST be more than 10 words to be approved):
Hey, so I'm interested in writing music for the concert hall and also interested in writing for film and video games. I'm a guitar player with a background in bluegrass/traditional, popular, and classical music.

SOME THINGS I'VE LEARNED ABOUT COMPOSITION:

Music should be completely clear and perfect in every way and never give the listener the feeling that something doesn't sound right.

Transitions should sound completely natural.

Once a piece has started being written, many of its characteristics are locked into place and can't be changed without adding weakness.

Igor Stravinsky: "For myself, I have always considered that in general it is more satisfactory to proceed by similarity rather than by contrast. Music thus gains strengths in the measure that it does not succumb to the seductions of variety. What it loses in questionable riches it gains in true solidarity."

Any new parts should be prepared.

A composer should have a list of techniques to work with. He should use them in moderation throughout a piece to keep the listener's attention until the end.

Melodic music is made of parts, some thematic, some nonthematic.

Each part should have a purpose.

That's all for now. I welcome your comments on this. It's all pretty new to me.

I do have Vienna Symphonic Library but have not yet mastered it sufficiently to produce acceptable (to me) MP3s (though I think the '6 Scenes for solo cello' is using VSL)
