How to go about your composing? Do you hum and record... or do it on paper?

I can guarantee that when my head hits the pillow at night, then a fully blown, symphonic orchestra will take the melody that i've been humming and run with it. It's then a mad dash up to my studio t…

United we stand! So we've all talked about this forever. How do we put actions to our words? Why is it so hard to organize composers? Everyone else seems to have a guild or association. Any ideas?

Reel Time

Have just spent ALL DAY with director. Have now gotten all 9 reels of score completed and mixed. have delivered first 3 reels to him ready for Twickenham tomorrow. And i'm just about to keel over dead from exhaustion, so i don't have the energy to shout and scream about his obsessive micro-management of EVERY SINGLE NOTE PLACEMENT!

A Quick Update

Ok, so that went better than expected. (See last blog).

Even more work has been put in to it to tighten it up; color grading, background audio and, more importantly for me, the soundtrack has been added. I now know where my cues more or less fit. Did you not have a spotting session Russ? Yes, i did. But the thing is with films is that it's made by very creative people with a lot of artsy things they want to say in it; even in a violent movie such as this. And so cue placement and duration has c… Continue

Dark, yet well lit.
Your compositions have a sort of warmth, that prominences the characters that you build(/mention) (e.g Darius).
I am sure they would sound even more scintillating when performed.
Have you ever considered using a Tabla ? I thought 'Darius Breaks' was looking for one !
Hope you don't mind my intrusion !!

Oh - and thanks Russell for your wonderful comments about my music. Sorry, I didn't mention it before; was distracted. I'm looking forward to listening to your music as soon as I can find a moment without interruption.

Best regards,

Ok, so. First comment. This had better be good, right? Im composing for high budget, american indie film. It's a gritty, dirty crime thriller. There isn't much score needed, but my god it's intense. The director is flying over to see me again this week end. This is my first BIG scoring project and 'im running my studio on 1 gig of memory (shhh!) and a lot of late nights!; yes, it is possible to do!. I'm realizing that life is what happens to other people.

For all you hardcore composers out there, I'm also using EWQL, Reason 3, Cubase SX3 and other VST's - What??? Whadya mean that's low end? Hey, have you seen the prices of VSL lately? it's that or the mortgage. Did i mention I'm only running a gig. Hey! it's my studio and i know how to milk it.

Back to the film. It's being mixed and mastered into 5.1 at Twickenham Studios, England, which is kinda rare for such a small project. And that aint cheap. Am i seeing any payment for this? you bet your ass, sunshine.

And so it goes. Back and forth over skype and ftp servers to deliver, well, the deliverables. Sometimes cues hit the mark first time. others need a lot of rewriting. Even the spotting session can bring about red herrings!
