The Music

This music definitely sounds better by clicking on the LEFT DOWN ARROW and listening via QuickTime.

Most cues are from film and TV projects. Oma's Waltz, Opa's last Dance are from a beautiful National Film Board animation. Irish Coffee, Bitch of Belfast are from a feature called " Hockey Came to Belfast" "Paris Story" is from a Bravo Biography on the writer Mavis Gallant. Tibetan Lament and Khampa Mountain are from a CBC series called , "The Nature of Things" with Dr David Suzuki. This series was called "Lost Secrets" and was about Tibetan Medicine.

"Roots Dream . . . "and "Public Fiction" are re-mixes of the arrangements I created for some Walker Blaine's melodies which became the album "Body Of Light" 2008.

"Dark Forrest" and "Trials of the Young" are from a demo for a panda movie that is still in production. There is still hope.

"Landslide", 19 person string ensemble plus VSL horns and perc. is a demo for a kung fu fight scene never released.

"Ada and Otto" is the tail credits from a brave little film called "smallfilm" that has a sort of Matrix sort of twist where you realize the characters are dreaming...sort of.

Guillianos Dream is from a CBC show called "Zed"

About Me:
My main passion is film music at this point. Possibly because this is my main source of income. Possibly because I can engage in a wide range of styles and hybrids. It has a wide field of expression.

I love music from all over the world, Asia Africa, Middle East etc. My orchestral tastes get mixed with wooden flutes, odd percussion, wide ranges of stringed instruments, duduks. I don't really follow any rules for what works together, though I've only scratched the surface in these regards.

There is a wonderful community of composers in Vancouver (Guild of Canadian Film Composers) who really help each other grow and develop.

Before I came to Vancouver to be a film composer I was the director of Karme Choling Buddhist Meditation Centerr in Vermont

Forgot to answer your other question! I was asked to pitch for the music to a series about everyday life in Tibet, 'A Year In Tibet', which ended up on the BBC here in the UK. I didn't get the job in the end unfortunately, but did come out with a few interesting pieces :-)

Just had to say I'm thoroughly enjoying Ada and Otto as I type.

Hi Robyn - thanks for your comment on my blog, and especially for your kind comments on my music.

In answer to your question (and I had to wrack my brains for this one as 'English Beauty' is an old piece) the guitar harmonics are a patch on the Korg X5 DR - a tiny but versatile little bit of kit that I haven't used in years... but maybe I should go back to?

Thanks for the friend invite :-)

Your music is wonderful - really enjoyed listening!

Thanks for friend invite. Yes, I've been to Orkney too - another great place to visit, but different again from Western Scotland (Islay). Since Orkney has the world's oldest prehistoric house, maybe your ancestors go back a long way. Enjoyed your music - very eclectic indeed !

Hi Robyn, thanks for dropping by and listening to some of my 'stuff'. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Notion uses samples from the LSO, and everything you hear is from that sample library. To answer your question--yup--if I can't get something to sound authentic, I won't tend to use it. However, Notion and its interfact does allow the composer quite a lot in the way of customization and tweaking. Cheers, John

A Cautionary Tale is cool. I like the orchestration, especially the Bass Clarinet. You have some quirky soundscapes posted!

Been listening for a while now, half the list somewhere

I think these tracks stand on their own, though made for a part in a film or TV. I don't need to visualize anything, several of the tunes are amazing.

Enjoyed to wake up to wake up to your landscapes! (4:30am here)
Keep it up!

Nice that you added me! New here, wonder if I have to add you as well? I will take the time to go through your music later and leave a comment about it! (Or maybe edit this one, if it is possible.)
Judging from the comments below, I will have something to look forward to!
Now I should have a few hours sleep, after being awake all night!
