I was in Herb's line writing orchestra, he was an amazing soul. I'll never forget one day arriving 5 mins late (as I had to every day since I had a class in the Newberry street building and it was a short hike) and he in his opening remarks of the day looked at me and said "Mister Alpiar! Your punctuality is exceeded only by your sheer brilliance!" and then he chuckled half sticking his tongue out in that Herb Pomeroy way. I was completely embarrassed and exalted simultaneously that he had something to say to me directly, even if it were a tongue in cheek insult sort of, it was Herb!! What an amazing spirit...
Chris, Thank you. I was at Berklee from 1986 to 89. I was an MP&E major and guitar was my principle. Herb Pomeroy died recently and I went to his tribute which Ken Pullig organized. Joe Lovano, Hal Galper, Jack Waldreth, Paul Schmeling and the Berkle student jazz band, all really burned it up. Ted Pease wrote an incredible piece in Herb's honor for 3 trumpets.
Since I have discovered Schillinger my musical life has really taken a turn. Berklee was originally called the Schillinger House and taught his mathematical system exclusively.
Schillinger revived my inner beatnik ; )
Hey Phillip! welcome to the forum and WOOT Berklee alum! What years did you go? I was there 90-95 with performance (sax) and jazz composition dual major. I really miss that whole gang and I wish I could go back and be a beatnik student for life ;-)
