Nikolas replied to Gav Brown's discussion Call for entrants: Super Short composition contest
"Hi, I'd like to join and have a fair few ideas already... How do I join though? I befriend Gav and take it a step further I assume... Off I go! Good luck everyone!"

Nikolas replied to Janet Spangenberg's discussion “Making It” as a Classical Composer?
""Making it" is kinda difficult to nail down. However, I'd say that includes: a. Making money for composing. b. Ultimately making a loving on composing c. Getting your works performed more than once d. ergo getting your works…"

Victor Grauer replied to Nikolas's discussion Notation of irregular pulses (beats) in orchestral scores and parts?!?!?
"That makes a lot of sense, Nikolas. Most conductors today are used to seeing continual meter changes, ever since the Rite of Spring which has now become a repertory standard in many orchestras. And most instrumentalists would rather see lots of cues…"

Nikolas replied to Nikolas's discussion Notation of irregular pulses (beats) in orchestral scores and parts?!?!?
"Victor and Greg, Thank you both... I do find that making the time signature 4/4 throughout would be a disaster in this case, since the music would simply bypass any indication of 4/4 in the score... so I think I'm forced to use time…"

Greg Brus replied to Nikolas's discussion Notation of irregular pulses (beats) in orchestral scores and parts?!?!?
"This is a never ending struggle... My experience so far: - it is undoubtedly better to have the time signature showed in every measure than to have it change without notifying anyone (check Stravinsky) - bars don't equal pulse,…"

Victor Grauer replied to Nikolas's discussion Notation of irregular pulses (beats) in orchestral scores and parts?!?!?
"Your sketches are very interesting, Nikolas, this looks like it's going to be a real challenge for both the listeners and the performers, so good. There are different approaches you could take. One would be to simply adopt a basic meter of,…"

Notation of irregular pulses (beats) in orchestral scores and parts?!?!?

Ok.So here I am pondering on a piano concerto. It's high time I started working on one, especially since chances of a commission and performance are plenty. And here I am running into trouble, before even launching on my first bar:My melodic, form, architectural, harmonic ideas all stem from irregular beats/pulses... (think of Messiaen a little). With no time signatures on the bars, since every bar has a different, complicated time signature. For solo piano this is doable (albeit difficult to…See More

Nikolas replied to Gav Brown's discussion Future Composition Contests: Your opinion requested
"The limited length and size of score is something interesting, which should spring some interesting results, but how will people judge if the criteria are that easy to follow?  There needs to be some other criteria for people to vote.…"

Nikolas replied to Rodney Carlyle Money's discussion Your Goal as a Composer
"Well... It's a difficult subject, to say the least. I will comment a little on what others have said, but also on my own thoughts... 1. My goals are to satisfy myself. This means getting paid and making a living (done with the more general…"

Nikolas replied to Victor Grauer's discussion violin concerto
"Victor, I hope that my response is not noted as 'all negative' cause it's not so. I wouldn't be 'bothered' with posting and explaining, etc, if I thought it was a negative experience to listen to your concerto! Of…"

"Julie: Thanks. Yes, there are four movements available in youtube right now, so I will be posting the other two soon. I didn't want to create a single thread with all four. But there are plenty of chances of various performances (promises…"

Nikolas replied to Victor Grauer's discussion violin concerto
"Hi Victor, I'm not an admin/mod here, but I think that offering some things non-attached is fine, if there can be no other way... :-/ But I'll let others chime in on that. Now, on your concerto... I'd like to start with the more…"

Julie Harris replied to Nikolas's discussion Piano Stories for piano 4 hands - Nikolas Sideris
"Nikolas, these are delightful!!   I watched all the movements that I could find on YouTube and every one is a little gem.  Four hand pieces are so much fun to play and I love your humorous names.  The YouTube performances are…"
