About Me (Must include at least one paragraph of biographical information about you as a composer) - blank or minimal answers on this line will cause your request to be rejected. Include a link to your website if you have one.
I am a composer/performer who has taken the philosophy of style and genre synthesis as a personal mission. I've had the privelege of a diverse performing musical life beginning with basic lessons with my mother then moving into hard rock, then to bebop, classical guitar repertoire, Flamenco and Persian and Middle Eastern sounds. My compositions (available at the Australian Music Centre- or view my LIST OF ORIGINAL COMPOSITIONS.pdf) include over 60 pieces for or with classical guitar and many jazz, chamber works, many choral pieces and works for orchestra. My current work consciously derives some material from historical and cultural musical interests as well as gleaning ideas from other musical works or cultures to act as springboards to new music. The new music combines personalised learning and intuition with the application of ideas and musical material gleaned from acquaintance.` I also perform spontaneous compositions/improvisations in recitals entitled "From Many Worlds". These performances draw on my eclectic musical interests to form unique and free-flowing sound worlds, again utilizing styles and genre signals. Such pieces are valuable to the study as they show a compositional process which acts in perhaps a more fundamental manner, as they are composed and realised spontaneously.

I am interested in furthering the field of composing with genres and styles as this is a logical outcome of our times, and feel that this area allows for focused depth enriched by mental and cultural tools that allow the broadening of personal and community skill and knowledge in music-making. I am a learner and am intent on fostering a learning environment through collaborative enterprise, experimentation and personal diligence, and so wish to take this practice to an expanded academic area.

I am interested in the emerging global civilization which one would hope will eventually be based on principles of unity and equity and on the understanding that each of us is the trust of the other. My borrowing or appropriation of musical elements and ideas, processes and philosophies are inspired by this hope. My aim as what Tolkein called a "sub-creator", is to draw the eternal into this transient world through my music making.

Can you recommend prospective examiners for this doctoral study?

Hello, I will be submitting my work and exegesis for a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in a few months. It has to do with the establishment of a field of study in COMPOSING WITH STYLES AND GENRES. It includes major and minor compositions demonstrating the practice with an exegesis containing an intro, methodology, background, analyses, an auto ethnographic essay, and a glossary of the practice as an initial taxonomy. I am wanting to have you as my colleagues to suggest prospective examiners who… Continue

Composing with Styles and Genres

Posted on March 17, 2010 at 6:59am 0 Comments

Hello all, I am interested in corresponding with other composers who engage in composing with styles and genres. THis is the subject of my doctoral study where I differentiate between poly-stylism which is a common enough occurence, and poly genre music that gives two or more genre SIGNALS in the music. I am also looking at how the composer is both product of global cosmospolitan society (emerging) and a contributor to heritage. My new compositions demonstrate the practice that becomes a field… Continue
