"Well, I don't feel it is very waltz-like. It's in 3/4 time, but that doesn't make it a waltz. Waltzes have a characteristic rhythmic feel to them, a kind of impelling of the dancer forward. As well as a certain swing. It is a dance…"

"^^^ Yes, Jon, a disgusting swindle and pricey considering it's a book that's been around for quite some time. I saw this book a while ago. It's quite good but it won't magically make anyone a wonderful orchestrator. It does seem…"

Help choosing an orchestration/instrumentation book.

Hi there, I just got paid and wanted to invest some money in books for orchestration/instrumentation.The trouble I have is that there are a lot of good books out there and I can't decide which one to choose, especially because they aren't particularly cheap.I was hoping to get some suggestions on which book I should buy and maybe get some pros and cons of certain books. One book that came to my mind was "The Guide to MIDI Orchestration" by Paul Gilreath.I like composing on Finale but at the end…See More

About Me (Must include at least one paragraph of biographical information about you as a composer) - blank or minimal answers on this line will cause your request to be rejected. Include a link to your website if you have one.
My name is Marcel, am 30 years old and I live in Austria.
I am currently working a part time job to save money to continue studying music composition.

I have not published any music or worked professionally in the music business.

The compositions I write are private although, I sometimes share them with friends, musicians or other composers for feedback.

I have played in bands and also with the orchestra where I used to study in as a guitar player.
Musicals are my favorites when it comes to playing with bigger groups. The once I have played until now are Little Shop of Horror and Le Notre Dame De Paris.

You may ask what I am doing here, since I am not a professional composer. I came here to interact with other composers and maybe learn a few things to improve my knowledge of music theory, instrumentation, orchestration, counterpoint and others.

I am excited to read the posts.

PS: This is the first music forum I join so please don't hesitate to let me know if I am doing something wrong. Thanks :)
