'Spes quod despero' for string quartet and piano

After finishing up another part of my second edm album and having mostly worked on full orchestral pieces I decided it was time for something else, something more intimate.'Spes quod despero" is…Continue

I was testing out my new orchestral template yesterday and suddenly found myself working on the piece of music below. This is targeted at the media so don't expect extremely complicated , classical,…Continue

"mastering" orchestral music

Started this discussion. Last reply by Jonas Steur Jul 3, 2011. 4 Replies

Hello everybody, I'm new here but instead of a cheesy introduction thread or spamming my music I wanted to dive straight into a technical discussion. I released lots of electronic (dance) music in…Continue

The last 10 years I've mostly been active as a composer, producer , sound engineer and even dj in the electronic music scene.
Usually this comes down to making music for the dance floors but my music also has been used in a few games , tv shows and even once in the background of a hollywood production ( and I mean really in the background, it's playing at some pool party in the movie 'never back down' for a few minutes so nothing glamorous ...but it's a start haha )

More recently I have been working on some more "soundtrack" ( orchestral or hybrid) music targeted to video games, tv , movies and wherever they might use it.
I'm doing reasonably well with the edm stuff and haven been making some ok money with it but I don't want to limit myself to this the rest of my carreer. hence the move towards orchestral writing .

Still alive

So it's been ages that I logged in here. Lots of things have been going on , good and bad. Lucky some of those things were music as well.

When I joined this forum last year I just started to venture beyond my edm work and tried to get into writing 'music for the media'. In this relative short time I actually managed to even make some progress although I unfortunately couldn't focus on it 100%.

The most interesting thing that happened was getting a shot at doing the music for a…

It's not all that bad :)

My previous blogs all were quite negative, first there was a war with the computer than some complaining about the current state of affairs in the music business.

Today I want to be positive for a change and it's quite easy to do so. I'm currently enjoying a holiday at the aegean sea cost with beautiful weather and being in the company of my lovely girlfriend. The only thing that I miss is making music. Unfortunately I'm not really able to write without some help from my ears so the…

The star trek utopia of free music in a world of global uncontrolled capitalism

Posted on June 15, 2011 at 6:53pm 2 Comments

Already a while ago I realised that I actually got used to the idea that even if I become a 'hit' composer ( and within the edm scene I already managed to score some 'hits' ) I will still be earning peanuts compared to even 11 years ago when I started releasing music.

A lot of people are considering music to be 'free' and say that composers, musicians and all other creators should create for the love of creating, l'art pour l'art.

If we would live in some utopian world , let's…

At war with the computer

Posted on June 13, 2011 at 7:05am 6 Comments

I have a quite capable machine as my main DAW, recent quadcore processor, loads of  RAM, great RME soundcard so for a while I have been living without any real workflow problems like for example having to bounce tracks or working with unacceptable latency.

Of course this made me overconfident because when I was setting up a new orchestral template I was not holding back in any way. One after the other massive multisample got loaded in, spiced with the necessary convolution reverbs and…
