Paul Smith replied to Johan Halmén's discussion Composing by improvising
"I just try to keep an ear open for a good idea while improvising, as I assume most everybody does who also composes. But I never sit down to it with that object in mind. For me, that whole thing is about just taking a little while to let whatever…"

Does anyone know if Garritan Personal Orchestra can be used with an iPad? If so, what might some of the drawbacks be? My tower finally went belly up recently, and I'm wondering if I should replace it, or if I could get much the same thing done with the above combination. The tower had a Soundblaster card in it, with Cakewalk software. Thanks.

"Thanks, Lori. In truth, 'Lullaby' has some extra instruments that softly accompany the piano part, but I wrote the piece such a long time ago ( my daughter's 14 now, and, boy, is THAT a day at the beach... ) that when I dug it up and…"

About Me (MUST be more than 10 words to be approved):
I'm a composer working on being more original. While I've gotten some good responses to things I've written, the fact is most of it sounds too much like what has already been done, however technically sound it may be from time to time...For want of a better way to put it, I need more of my own voice... I don't want to spend my musical life trying to rewrite great music of the past or present. No one needs the likes of me to attempt to do that, and, of course, it's the last thing that needs to be done, anyway ! So...I'm just here to learn whatever I can toward the end of being at least less obviously derivative than I have been up to now.

Hey Paul, thanks for your impressive report from Bali. I had and have a lot of work this week, so I wasn't able to answer earlier. I really comprehend what this means to a musicophile. To be invited and to be in at such an event - unique! Thanks again for letting me participate in this experience.Hope we'll soon have another chat. You have some new pieces here - I'll have a listen.

I'm glad you got my musical beach experience.  The ocean will be 2nd mvmt, followed by the glorious sunrise off the east coast.  You are correct.  It was a slice of heaven I had never experienced and do plan on going back.  There were so many magical moments, especially seeing dolphins feeding off the shoreline at low tide.

Thanks John.  Much too kind of you to say but appreciated more than you know!  My SC vacation was the best of my life and although I haven't completed the work dedicated to that experience, since you brought up their gorgeous islands, I decided to post a rough draft of the piece I had started entitled Hunting Island.  There are 3 movements but the 1st is all I've gotten from brain to page so far.  LIFE IS TOO BUSY FOR NOW!  Anyway maybe you could listen and let me know if you can feel my experience with the beach from the notes I've thrown together.  To you now, don't ever feel you're trying to rewrite great music.  It's a genre that needs to stay relevant and I love your G#m Prelude.  Please keep at it.  You also mentioned something about fine tuning your slower, melodic pieces.  Well you nailed it with A Lullaby for my Little Girl.  Very nice!  Enjoyed your works thoroughly!

Thanks for the add John.   When I'm feeling up to it, I'll take a listen to your music (I'm not too well at the moment).  In the meantime, feel free to listen to any of my stuff.  I'd be interested to know what you think of it.

Hi, John!  First of all, thank you very much for your nice comments on my music.  I have also listened and enjoyed your compositions.  They are all great and highly original, and my favorite is "G# minor prelude for piano".  Cheers!
