About Me:
I have Finale 2010, East West's Silver PLAY samples, and Logic Express 8. I'm a music technology - composition student at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh PA. Finally, I can pursue my dream:) Hopefully I'll have new music up as the year progresses.
Really liked what you have for a menu theme. Def sounds like you are growing musically and of course having the right software helps ;). Very Majestic sounding. Reminds me of a cross between Soul Calibur and Zelda Music...in a good way.
One thing I will say is that as you grow try little by little to branch out away from cliche sounds/themes/melodies/orchestrations. I know for videogame music there is usually a "type of sound" that is sought after depending on the genre of game. But I still see no reason for a little push in thinking about structure/form/and other melodic/harmonic and orchestration devices. Besides, it might help you carve out a niche and may help you in being recognized a little easier.
Hey John, took a listen to your reworked Forest-style piece. The orchestral color, emotional sense/ambience def comes across stronger with your new tools, congrats! It feels like a new piece. I liked it before and I like it even more.
Definitely, let me know when you put new works up and I'll stop by to take a listen.
You mean the orchestral "Tubular Bells". There is no patch in GPO for the Tubular Bells and it drives me crazy! I think when setting up your score and choosing your instruments/instrument library you will have to select "SmartMuisc SoftSynth" from the drop down and then on the left side choose "percussion" and I believe if go to the options on the right side and also choose "percussion" you might be able to get a Tubular Bell sound. I don't know what note it is mapped to though. I'm sure "SoftSynth" has a Tubular Bell sound somewhere. I'll have to double check myself.
What ambience setting do you use (concert hall, church, cathedral)? that will make a difference in many cases. Also, fianle can also be buggy and the issues can vary from person to person. I think if you open the Human Playback settings then click "HP Preferences" On the left there will be a list and you can choose dynamics and volume. Then in the main section of the window under crescendo/diminuendo try changing the setting to "ke velocity only" and see if that is any help at all.
There are limitations in GPO and Finale. I'm still trying to work my way through them. And like you I find the Horns too mellow and trying to find my way around it. I'm not sure if its something that needs to be worked out in the Kontakt Player.
Also, when setting your ambience reverb, you will wee "dry" and "wet" meter at the bottom right. For whatever setting you use always increase the "dry" meter by moving it to the right close to the end of the meter. I ususally go to about 5.2 You will have the ambience of the setting you choose plus a louder sound sound and sometimes that helps take out some of the "mellow" in the instruments.
let me know how it goes and if you find other solutions.
I don't know how much of Finale 2010 has changed as far as orchestral sounds. In 2009 there were a few options for instrument library sounds. There was "Garritan Instruments" as well as the "GPO" menu option in the "play through vst" menu drop down. Many times after setting up my score I reassign my instruments from the "GPO" option instead of the "Garritan Instrument". You can find the orchestral "Crash" cymbal sound in the orchestral percussion section of the "GPO". I think its mapped to either a high C, C# or D. I hope that was clear enough to help you out.
Yeah, of course I remember you! I was wondering what you were up to but I'm
glad to hear that your in college now and that you got your hands on a copy of Finale. Sure, feel free to ask any questions Finale or Composition related and hopefully I can help. I have didn't Finale 2010 only because it was a minor update to 2009 and so I'm waiting for a real update from 2009 before I get my next upgrade.
Actually stopped by to see if you had any new pieces posted that I could listen to and enjoy :)
Anyway, did you ever get your hands on a copy of Finle Software? It seems that at some point in the future Garritan plans to add a Garritan Choir with word builder and most likely will include it with Finale.
Hey bro, definately check out Simon Godden, he's started giving me some composing lessons recently via online.. He really knows his stuff, you should check him out!
