Composers Guild

United we stand! So we've all talked about this forever. How do we put actions to our words? Why is it so hard to organize composers? Everyone else seems to have a guild or association. Any ideas?

About Me (MUST be more than 10 words to be approved):
I am a professional saxophonist, clarinetist, composer, orchestrator, music copyist and educator. I have worked as a jazz musicians for many years. I also love a lot of classical music. Stravinsky, Bartok, Ives, Perschetti, Copland, Bernstein and Shostakovich are my favorites. I also love the jazz music of Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, Bill Frisell, Joe Lovano Jan Garbarek, Chris Potter and Charles Mingus. My hope is that the listener can hear some of their influences since i very humbly stand on the shoulders of these giants. I've taught many students woodwinds over the past 20 years. I also taught Electronic Music Production classes at a local community college in Portland OR. for quite a few years. I have a degree in composition from Berklee College of Music. And a certificate from UCLA in film scoring. Even though I am adept at using electronics, I try to have as much music as possible played and recorded by real , breathing, musicians. I tend to write out most of my musical ideas and rarely use a sequencer to compose. I am not necessarily opposed to the idea of composing on the computer but I feel that composing with a score pad works better for me. I usually transfer my pencil and paper sketches into Finale for score and part preparation. Some of my works have been published by Century City Masterworks Publishing. I am pleased to be a member of this forum and I'm excited to meet other contemporary serious composers.

Your music is carefully put together, interesting and I like your harmonic language, too. I'm very interested in Jazz. I approached it theoretically late, and I study  "the Juilliard method" of John Mehegan, when I can. The intersection of Jazz and classical form is our best hope for the future of American music, I think. peace
