I received my first commission at the untrained age of 19, through my classical guitar teacher. Then I got to study with Lewis Spratlan (commuting from Hampshire to Amherst College). In my late 20s I coordinated concerts of my works with Central American solidarity organizations, aligning with that issue helped me recruit well-known artists. Arthur Berger gave me some of his time during that period. I had a rich collaboration with a choreographer in my birthplace of Goucester, MA, for a time, writing for community musicians/singers. I justified not going to grad school--seeing academia as a racket--until my wife encouraged me to attend New England Conservatory in my 40s and get my MM. My self-concept as "a composer" had to be tempered with the realities of making a living and the divine obligation to utilize my other gifts. In recent years I gave up the stressful vocation of teaching music in schools and became a Mental Health Therapist (requiring a second Masters) following a few years as a Substance Abuse Counselor. I now write primarily for classical guitar with electronic enhancements, utilizing Apple's Mainstage live performance software.
