Composers Guild

United we stand! So we've all talked about this forever. How do we put actions to our words? Why is it so hard to organize composers? Everyone else seems to have a guild or association. Any ideas?

"I think it depends also on which type of music you want to make. If natural smooth sounding orchestra pieces is preferred - go with Garritan. If impressing film music is closer, EWQLSO is a must. But the latter is IMO not very naturalistic,…"

Garritan of EastWest?

I'm looking to buy an orchestra sampler VST, something inexpensive that serves basic needs (submitting decent realizations to competitions, messing around with Live, etc). Does anyone have a recommendation - Garritan Personal Orchestra or the EastWest equivalent? Or is there another program that I don't know about? Thanks :)

If you're in the NYC area, you should check out C4: The Choral Composer/Conductor Collective, a new music ensemble dedicated to performing choral works written in the last 25 years. We only perform modern works. This concert features "The Temple Bells", my NYC compositional debut!

For more information about the concerts, go to our website: c4ensemble.org.

Bassoon Piece Update

Posted on May 15, 2009 at 6:31am 0 Comments

My piece for bassoon, "Departure, 10:49pm", was performed to a warm reception on Wednesday night. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to be there - I have bronchitis! The Marketing Director of the ACO told me that people really loved the piece, which I'm happy about :) And there's a recording coming my way, which I'll put up as soon as I get it.

In other news, I finally completed a choral piece I'd started last January called "Kono Yoru (This Night)", which along with two other works ("Live… Continue

Finished!

I finished the piece right on time! It's called "Departure, 10:49pm", and is meant to evoke the end of a long day in NYC, coming home from Penn Station on the late train. (I write what I know!)

I'll post it as soon as its completely finalized, I'm waiting for it to be critiqued. But hurray!

Bassoon Update

So far the piece is about a minute and a half long. I have a three minute limit, and I'm not sure what to do at this point! It's fairly solid as it stands, but 1.5 minutes seems way too short. I'm wondering if I should expand the piece or just leave it...will need a couple of days to think that over.

Can she do it?

I'm trying to write/finish two pieces in less than a month. Oh joy :)

One of them is bassoon solo, 3 minutes or less, for the "Compose Yourself" workshop being held by the American Composers Orchestra. I have a cool idea at least - my observations at Penn Station, taking the late train home - just need it to be interesting. I'm not good at solo pieces because I don't think that that horizontally. I need to be creative! Due: May 1.

The second one is a choral… Continue
