Best to just compose when you want to, and not put so much pressure on yourself to constantly produce. At least that's what works for me!

United we stand! So we've all talked about this forever. How do we put actions to our words? Why is it so hard to organize composers? Everyone else seems to have a guild or association. Any ideas?

I think it depends also on which type of music you want to make. If natural smooth sounding orchestra pieces is preferred - go with Garritan. If impressing film music is closer, EWQLSO is a must. But the latter is IMO not very naturalistic, classi...

IMHO it is slight exxageration - IMHO those samples sound dry and uninspiring themselves, without life. Regarding orchestra sounds - in my opinion, the overall best sound, with punch and with life behind them are ProjectSAM's sample libraries. But...

Do you have a preference between the silver and gold editions for Garritan?

That's interesting! I've been wondering though, how many film soundtracks (in particular) with orchestral pieces use VST synths? And if they do, what kind of products or techniques do they use to "make the bar" in that sense and get away with not ...

One day :) I'm going to get GPO, but not right now (money is a bit tight). When I'm ready, looks like that's what I'll get! Thanks everyone

Well honestly if you want the best, go with Vienna Instruments, its expensive but its at least 10 notches above the rest in many ways ;-)

Another point to consider about these two libraries is what your compositional process and needs are. If you are a meticulous editor, and want to have absolute control over every note and articulation, I'd give a very strong nod to Garritan. As on...

I now have both GPO and EWQL I am glad I have both. because as Jan pointed out they both have there pros and cons.. when you have them both they seem to cover each other nicely. EWQL is missing alot of articulations that are IMO necessary. GPO is ...

I think it sort of depends on what software you are using. If you are using Finale, then I'd suggest GPO, because it integrates really nicely. I've heard of a lot of problems trying to get human playback to work with EWQLSO. However, if you're usi...

I wouldn't tell you to spend the money. GPO and GPO Finale, not a whole lot of difference. If you're doing with a notation app, don't bother. With the idea you might use a sequencer/DAW, here's the poop: Per EWQLSO Silver, some of Garritan's patc...

Well without having more of a budget I think you are totally on by just jumping in and buying Garritan - his stuff is really good and he is personally an excellent guy with a really good work ethic and great crew. I still think they are slightly p...

great, thanks! I'm just trying to be careful before I purchase, don't have a bunch of money to put down. :)

New Choral Music Concert 6/4 and 6/6 in NYC

If you're in the NYC area, you should check out C4: The Choral Composer/Conductor Collective, a new music ensemble dedicated to performing choral works written in the last 25 years. We only perform modern works. This concert features "The Temple Bells", my NYC compositional debut!

For more information about the concerts, go to our website: c4ensemble.org.

Bassoon Piece Update

My piece for bassoon, "Departure, 10:49pm", was performed to a warm reception on Wednesday night. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to be there - I have bronchitis! The Marketing Director of the ACO told me that people really loved the piece, which I'm happy about :) And there's a recording coming my way, which I'll put up as soon as I get it.

In other news, I finally completed a choral piece I'd started last January called "Kono Yoru (This Night)", which along with two other works ("Live Love", pos… Continue

Finished!

I finished the piece right on time! It's called "Departure, 10:49pm", and is meant to evoke the end of a long day in NYC, coming home from Penn Station on the late train. (I write what I know!)

I'll post it as soon as its completely finalized, I'm waiting for it to be critiqued. But hurray!

Bassoon Update

So far the piece is about a minute and a half long. I have a three minute limit, and I'm not sure what to do at this point! It's fairly solid as it stands, but 1.5 minutes seems way too short. I'm wondering if I should expand the piece or just leave it...will need a couple of days to think that over.

Can she do it?

I'm trying to write/finish two pieces in less than a month. Oh joy :)

One of them is bassoon solo, 3 minutes or less, for the "Compose Yourself" workshop being held by the American Composers Orchestra. I have a cool idea at least - my observations at Penn Station, taking the late train home - just need it to be interesting. I'm not good at solo pieces because I don't think that that horizontally. I need to be creative! Due: May 1.

The second one is a choral piece (probably just S… Continue
