I am from Ottawa, Canada. For me, composing music is a form of expression, joy and a lot of hard work much like any other creative process.

The main reason in joining this forum is to improve what I do and at the same time being involved with a bunch of great people who share a similar interest and some who have a lot more experience than I do. I am especially interested in Film Music but enjoy many other genres as well.

I started playing guitar at 12 and I had always fooled around on a piano but never taking it too seriously until the last several years. Having a great fascination with musical instruments, I naturally got into the virtual midi sampling world. I also play trumpet and flute having played in a couple of 8 piece jazz/rock bands years ago.

I have set music to several pieces of film/video footage that I have edited out or borrowed from various places (I sincerely hope I am not breaking any copyright laws in the process as I am using them ONLY to practice on and have something to show.) All of my earlier work was damaged in a basement flood. I will be posting some of these videos from time to time.

Piano
Guitar (Classic and steel string)
Bb Trumpet
Piano
C Flute
I use a MacIntosh MacPro Quad system with a CME 88 keyboard with:
Digital Performer
MachFive 2 Sampler
Kontakt 2 Sampler
Various Garritan sound libraries and the samples that come with the above samplers.
NI Absynth and FM7
Korg M1EX, Roland JV 1080, and Yamaha Tx802

Hi Del,
My job took me away for a few days this week so I now read your comments about getting on with the main income thing also. I had a look at your site... nicely done unlike mine which needs a bit of work done. Yes! this forum has been a little quieter than others but, that's changing as the membership is rising fairly quickly. My view on the sample library thing is quite straightforward. GPO in particular was for me, an inexpensive entry into the world of large orchestration. After purchasing EWQLSO there was no looking back. Garritan software control is great but the samples are relatively poor although, as someone said on another forum. A well constructed composition using average samples is more listen able than poor writing with great instruments. Hmm! I've typed this in with reservations as there are many and varied listening tastes.

You remember me Del :-)
Yes the NS forum in which I no longer take part.
I would not have been able to give an opinion comparing GG to EW there.
To answer your question on playability of each violin. The Strad is the more playable because of the Giorgio factor. Yes I have listened to a few demo's on his Trumpet and they are great. Roberto (oldbob) did a fine job on a few. Both Rob and I spend more time in the vi-control forum these days playing with the technology but! I have been spending more time in this forum because as much as I'm interested in getting better recordings, my passion is composition. I strive to get better at producing tunes and themes. I, as a veteran guitarist didn't spend enough time while a young man in learning music theory. So, although I use inversions and modulations, I do it without really understanding the reasons other than “it sounds right so it must be right.
I rambled on a bit there! Back to your question. The East West violin is fuller and sweeter IMO but requires the use of up to 24 key switches. As someone not good enough on the keyboard to play note perfect I need to go back in after recording and tweak the controllers/timing, anyway so it's not a big deal for me. This doesn't mean I dislike the Strad. I just think it needs careful eq'ing and placing in a space.

This is a great place to be Del, such a diversity of people, styles and genre.
I'm glad you're enjoying it to.

Regards

Ray

Hi Del,
You've really been enjoying yourself with the Strad but I'd love to hear some of your pieces played by Ahmad. I think they would come alive with real expression. I have the Strad myself but now prefer the violin from EW Gypsy. For me it is just a little smoother. Perhaps a little eq would take the edge off and a little less constant vibrato.

Thanks very much for your reply. It is very cool to see you live in Ottawa. Can you give me any orchestration tips or anything? I will be rescoring truth and consequence on my sequencer as I need to fill it out more and the original has some timing issues as well as orchestration issues. Thank you very much. Also are you using logic 8 by chance?

Hi Del, Thanks for listening to my track, glad you liked it. I was quite pleased with the strings, but hopefully they will be real ones in the future, as I have a good friend who is a professional string player and she is quite happy to record for me, which is great.

I'll listen to some of your tracks ASAP.

I really like your music. I especially enjoyed "The Horror Of It All"...kind of bites into my style cause I like experimenting with natural sounds...it's all very good though!

Sorry, I am not a professional composer. I want to start composing but first of all I need to know what is necessary to start composing music (mostly classical) - what software, keyboards, etc. would you recommend? I would appreciate any advice you could give me.
Thank You
Doru
