Writing music to a scene... (or movie)

How I do it is I watch the film clip to decide on the general, overall feeling of the piece. After that I use an equation to determine the amount of bars in the given time signature/speed required to…

Great work, Anne. I didn't know that about Ptolemy... Will read the rest later... And I agree, all too often people think it is their human right to have an opinion on anything and everything, when they really shouldn't.

Tomislav, I am not in the business, but perhaps it would help for you to list your qualifications and major projects?

Yes, I tend to agree with you, I often find myself composing and think "hang on, I can't do that" and then I think "I'm not in grade 6 theory of music, I can do that". Interesting idea for my honours thesis in a few years time, "Composition in Music…

Thanks for asking Daniel. Actually, I agree with some of and parts of many of the initial statements that were made in this conversation before I even came into it. Adrian, Tyler, Steve and Per - just to name a few - all have some interesting and va…

This is interesting stuff, Anne, do you have an opinion on the topic now that you have read this or are you still awaiting more in depth research?

Hi Steve, that sounds quite interesting in regard to the harmonic series and conterpoint, do you have a source where I could do further study on the matter?

Sorry Anne, I'm away on holiday at the moment and so I don't have any of my music textbooks, the only research tool I have is the internet.

I hope I haven't over-inundated everyone with the information in my posts; it's just that I do feel it is important to gather a few facts and to obtain some information on any given topic before proceeding with debate. Or, perhaps I'm missing the po…

Post Number Three: Rameau "Rameau . . . published his famous Traité de l'harmonie (Teatise on Harmony) in 1722." (p. 381) "Theory or, as it was called at the time, the "science" of music, engaged Rameau throughout his life. In his numerous writings…

Back for the second post. This topic, by the way, is not an area of specialty for me. All I can do is provide material that will hopefully fill in some 'holes' for us. :) So, on with quoting Grout and Palisca: "Anicius Manlius Boethius (ca. 480-52…

Okay, I simply want to outline a few of the musical theorists that have come before us, set a backdrop regarding the times in which they were working and try to find a sense of direction that will perhaps enable us to have something of a rational co…

blah blah blah, "everything is blurred" , "no consencus can be reached", "to modern composers there are no rules"... To these comments, i agree in the limited sense, but not in how they probably are read by any folks who just happen to stop by. I…

The rules of music composition developed over time to help composers avoid what were perceived as the errors of the past. I've heard two explanations regarding the dictum against parallel fifths (and octaves). The simplest is that it was a reaction…

And, am I the only one in the group who has access to and is able to read information from valid text or other sources? I do not have to be the one to carry the ball. All you need do is lay some groundwork and then the debate can begin! :) Anyway, I…

Hi Daniel

Welcome to the forum.
I see you sitting at a keyboard in your avatar but it don't sound like real playing in the example of your music here.

Hi Daniel. Welcome to the forum! I've just listened to your game score and think it is pretty cool.

I admire you for giving soundtrack work a real go. As you say, there must be a lot of calculation involved in the syncing! It's a shame they didn't give you sound effects as well as video because then it would have been easier to know when to make the music bigger or smaller.

I think the grandiose elements of your score are the best bits, with the long sustained organ chords. It would sound amazing with a real church organ and some reverb! The only thing I would criticise would be the faster, busier parts. I thought they weren't quite as dark in mood as they might have been. I find the busy stuff really hard to compose! John Williams is the MASTER of that.

So, congratulations and good luck in the contest.

Alex
