Writing music to a scene... (or movie)

Yea, it's the terrible timpani from the Sony DLS VSTi.

Writing music to a scene... (or movie)

How I do it is I watch the film clip to decide on the general, overall feeling of the piece. After that I use an equation to determine the amount of bars in the given time signature/speed required ...

Nalinikanth: With all due respect, I disagree with your statement "the Cadential Trill on the Super-Tonic also gives us a hint of the Mediant of the Tonic Chord." The function of the trill is purely that of decoration, if the composer wanted to im...

Hi everyone, please have a look at the score to my Sanctus, sorry but I don't have a recording. Unfortunately I don't have a resident choir living in my home ; ) Thank you so much, Daniel Sullivan

In regard to my previous comment, this would not be appropriate of course, throughout the whole duet, but mainly to establish cadence points. Also I'm doing Grade 6 Theory with the AMEB and two part contrapuntal writing is one of the tasks, some o...

The thing you have to realise is that string instruments can do "double-stopping" where they play two strings at once, for example in a G major triad (with doubled root): violin 1: 3rd finger on D string (G), 1st finger on A string (B). Violin 2: ...

Cool, so is gaming your main composition area?

This is an interesting topic, I would have to conclude however that double trills would not consitute consecutive fifths. This is because there is no actual notated movement, e.g (in semiquavers) (voice 1) d-> c -> d -> c -> d ->c, (voice 2) a ->,...

Hi Luis, I think the game is for PC but I'm pretty sure they have a version for a few of the other consoles. The sequencer used was garritan personal orchestra and sony dls soft synth for the organ and timpani.

Hi Daniel

Welcome to the forum.
I see you sitting at a keyboard in your avatar but it don't sound like real playing in the example of your music here.

Hi Daniel. Welcome to the forum! I've just listened to your game score and think it is pretty cool.

I admire you for giving soundtrack work a real go. As you say, there must be a lot of calculation involved in the syncing! It's a shame they didn't give you sound effects as well as video because then it would have been easier to know when to make the music bigger or smaller.

I think the grandiose elements of your score are the best bits, with the long sustained organ chords. It would sound amazing with a real church organ and some reverb! The only thing I would criticise would be the faster, busier parts. I thought they weren't quite as dark in mood as they might have been. I find the busy stuff really hard to compose! John Williams is the MASTER of that.

So, congratulations and good luck in the contest.

Alex
