I agree with all that everyone has said. You will find that some have an almost fanatical view about which DAW is best, but to me, the best DAW is the one that enables you to get your work done. If you like Garageband and you can work with it, Logic…
Dallas,
On a short, it really isn't as complicated as you might think. What you should definitely do immediately is send the director/prod a "deal memo". A deal memo is essentially a short format agreement which cements the main details of the long…
Hey Dallas,
On a short, it really is not as complicated as you might think. The first thing I would do is start with a "deal memo". That is essentially a small version of a large format contract that outlines the basic terms of the agreement, i.e.…
Dallas: Do you belong to a performing rights organization? If so, that's one place to look for info. Also the SCL (Society of Composers & Lyricists) is a group for film composers. You might consider joining to gain access to such info. I think all y…
You need to ask solicitor, not amateur composers who haven't reached your success. Only a good solicitor can prevent you getting ripped off, although he may rip you off himself. Vicious market.
Congratulations on contract.
I just finished a short film composition and the filmmaker is asking for contracts and release forms. What is standard and how should it be written up?
Hi Dallas,
I've been working with logic for over 6 years now (mac always and forever) and while all Apps have their foibles, I would say if you enjoy Garage Band, there's never been a better time to move up to the Pro Application. Logic Studio has a…
As I don't work with garageband I'm not that familiar with power-saving tecniques for it, although getting more ram and a fast computer will certainly help. You can try mixing down some of the more power-hungry instruments - computers generally find it easier to run audio tracks than power-sucking instruments. Good luck with the job,
Dan
Great music Dallas - loving the filmic feel of this stuff - I do a fair bit in a similar style using logic - we switched from cubase 5 years ago and while all apps have their strengths, the mac/logic combination has been very solid and creative. There's a tonne of stuff you can find out about short-cuts and useful tips on the many logic forums, but if you ever get stuck with something, feel free to give me a shout and I'll do me best to help out,
All the best,
dan

Hahaha, yeah I'd consider Dream Theater to be big influence on me. Logic 8 is my DAW of choice, but depending on the task at hand, I switch back and forth between Logic and ProTools. I run a digi 003 interface with a Mac Pro. My most prize possession as of right now is the Vienna Symphonic Library. Can't stop using it. Every time I sit down to write a song, it begins with Vienna.
Please post your music here and an avatar. May I just remind you, this is a forum for individual composers not for any business selling services. There is an Ad column for that on the right.
