I've been working to put together a working big band, using all my arrangements/compositions. This is the first rehearsal that I felt was good enough to offer up the recordings for general comment. …Continue
"I can't claim to have spent a ton of time reviewing your piece (who has the time?). The work is nice, but there is not much variation. While playing the piece on YouTube, I clicked random points in the timeline. Whatever had been playing before…"
I enjoyed this and especially liked your tight, disciplined control on the material. Is there a chance of a performance for this? If so, I hope you get it recorded because then we will get to hear the musics' true quality,…"
"It may be restrictive to prefer a composer uses a DAW for a higher quality mockup, but your stance is restrictive to those listening
Maybe everyone here "should" be able to interpret score-only or NS playback - god knows there are…"
"Hi Charles--IMHO the playback is fine and more than adequate to present your work.
Each composer decides for themselves, what playback they will use for their recording. They may not have expensive libraries or a DAW, or even know how to use either,…"
"Hi again Ray - Yes, it's so important to consider the breath when writing for wind players. Besides saxophone, I double on flute and clarinet, so I feel I have a pretty good handle on those. I've written a fair bit for horn and feel…"
"Hi Ingo -
Thank you for the feedback, and for taking the time to listen! I agree, that it could use a bit more "bite" though dissonance - especially in the first half - which will make the transition to the development section a bit…"
"Hi Gav - Thanks for taking the time to listen. I agree completely about the piece's lack of melodic strength. Though I feel it has strong, recognizable motifs, it does lack a certain singable.... something. Something more…"
"I enjoyed this Charles, thanks for posting it here. You have good ideas and sounds and the lines have interesting rhythms and harmonies and counterpoint as well. There is an overall "sameness" to it that is punctuated nicely at 3:46…"
I listened to this twice, the second time after I downloaded the score so I could follow it more closely. There are some aspects of this that I liked and some that I didn't. I feel that the work is well-crafted and that you know how…"

For the longest time I was a semi-pro to pro saxophonist, making much of my living playing and teaching. A few years ago, my wife had an incredible job opportunity that brought us to the wilds of England. Suddenly, we were in the middle of the country-side, and the saxophone jobs were few and far between. To stay sane, I started writing at first for big band, and then branching out into electronic and orchestral music. We've since moved back to California, where I decided to make a go of composing as my primary musical avocation! Now any moment not spent with family or work is devoted to music - writing, learning, and performance.
