It does not happen to me very often, but it does. A melody just fly's into my head, and from there I start composing music. While composing, this idea just keeps on coming, as If i'm pulling an endless spaghetti from the plate. I just love it, whe...

The string on a violin resonates stronger when you play on an open string. The finger muffles the string a tiny bit, since skin absorbs sound far better than hard wood. I played folk music in an ensemble once and the string section were noticeably...

Probably because A minor and C major is more commonly used in all music, and is therefore not as foreign as C minor to the common ear. I patch it together like this: Foreign/Uncommon key = Shock/Excitement. Common key = Familiar/Safe. This ultimat...

This will however be compromised when composing for an ensemble or orchestra. It's hard to compose so that every instrument sounds at it's best all the time.

How about the fact that certain instruments resonate (have more natural overtones) in certain keys, so that it does affect the timbre in an absolute sense. For example a guitar piece in E minor will always sound better than one in Bb minor becaus...

I do think most composers tend to favorize certain keys. But if it's because a certain key sounds better than another. That's hard to prove, it's really up to personal taste and musical background.

I would think that implementation of equal tempered tuning since the 18th century would largely eliminate such a view of tonality.. Is E major "brighter" than G major? Not if the relationships between the notes of the scale are all equalized. I te...

I worked together with a music teacher with a perfect pitch. He used to play at funerals and weddings. He always played in D minor at funerals because "Everything seemed alot more beautiful in that key". Don't know if it's true but probably the di...

Hello Britt. It's late here, though I'm tired I thought i'd listen to your music. Many styles, but I think I can find something similar, but unique in all... This on a quick listen.

I'll end with saying it is interesting and that I will come back, to leave a better comment than I am able to now. The string quintets are both also good.
The last, quite different genre.

Good!

Keep it up!
btw thanks for the constructive comment on Contemplation...

Hello again, Britt! I have just started a new group entitled Young Composers and Beginners if you are interested. I can see that you are far from being a "beginner"--your work is exceptional for your age--but if you know any other members who would be interested in it, then please spread the word! Thanks for your consideration!

Great work! I'm really happy to know that there other students my age with the same aspirations--I don't often find that at my own school. I would also like to compose for film as a professional, but currently, I have only written for string ensembles. I hope you will appreciate my invitation. :)
