I once heard that Satie wrote Trois Morceaux en forme de poire (Three pieces in the form of a pear.) because Saint-Saens complained that his music followed no form. Just to tweak him a little further, it includes seven pieces, rather than thr…
Short answer:
Agreed.
Though knowing form and being able to execute it based on established theory is great, music can't evolve if we don't challenge the norms.
BTW: The concerto is epic. REALLY good stuff.
Patrick I believe you've hit the nail on the head with this. In my experience music is about entertaining the mind for a period of time. That can mean anything from personal edification to guilty pleasure. When the experience is unpleasant with no r…

About Me:
I was a professional musician in the Royal Marine Band Service for 13 years. Since becoming a civilian many moons ago have continued to perform and write music for the last 20 years just recently becoming more proficient witht eh advent of suitable software to open the door to orchestral and choral composition. Recently written a Piano Concerto which I need to copyright before putting samples online but will do so soon as would be very interested in comments from fellow musicians.

Your Piano Concerto is awesome! Totally enjoyable. Good luck finding a great player to champion it. I have an idea of someone you could approach, but I'll send that privately. Just send him a link to this recording and ask him to listen. Even with a champion it'll be an uphill battle. Do you know any rich people who might be willing to make a donation to an orchestra to underwrite a performance?
Congratulations, Andy, on making EWQLSC sing! Your Gloria is also an interesting piece, somewhat reminiscent of Karl Jenkin's works for orchestra and choir. Thanks for sharing!
Andy, I like your experimental work, especially African Dream: I feel at home listening to something like that, because it's unique and fresh. I'm tired of listening to the same old sound from most film composers. Good luck to you!
Andy,
Your Concerto is so much better now than on first hearing. I still don't like the sound of the piano but as a whole it is very listenable indeed thanks for sharing,
Hey Andy, thought i would leave a message as I said I would comment on your concerto about a month (2?) ago. Been rather busy, too busy to give a
fair comment in writing.
Considering I don't know "theory", barely acquinted with what people on composer's forum call "sonata form", my thoughts about it wil have a different type of approach. Hell, most critics know nothing of what they write about anyway. I guess anything may suffice. :)
"Good concerto"/"bad concerto"/"10 out of 12 beers" nah,....
Hi Andy,
'just listened to your music here... mainly the piano concerto which would be so much better on a real piano or at least something like Quantum Leap piano with a decent number of differing dynamic samples. The piano roll sound was off putting for me but there is no doubting your compositional skill.
Just added a 'String Octet for Christmas', please enjoy. Written for a friend who plays in a charity orchestra and various combinations thereof. Will be scoring it over the next week or so if anyone out there is interested.
Kind regards
Andy.S
