Help compose the World's Longest Piece!

The rules:

Each composer gets up to 2 minutes of one section for which he/she is resposible. The composer will deliver a stereo audio file of that section. The composer will own his section of music, but must release it under a creative commons license, allowing it to be placed within the larger composition.

The music will not be for sale or license. If any money is generated from the work, that money will be given to a charity (voted on by the contributing composers.)

This is an unending work. Our hope is to have hundreds of composers work on it, and to always be adding new ones.

Each section should flow as well as possible into the next, therefore we are creating a pattern of simple transition rules for the composer to follow as much as they can.

Let's make history, baby.

Read Before Composing.

(we want a player here that will allow you to input your mp3 where it goes and do the crosfades accordingly. Leaving blank spaces and silence for the empty spaces that have yet to be composed. Anyone know how to do this?)

Mike - wanna take the lead on this? I just don't have the time!

How are we going to determine the order of the sections?

It would probably help if I knew who I was following and who was folloing me so I could listen to their style and maybe provide a measure or two of smoother stylistic transition...

I wish I had a suggestion Jared. It's a bit of an oddball project really - it's the kind of thing I really like, but some people might not take it seriously enough to want to participate.

Personally I have actually made a start on mine but I've had to stop and do other work for a while. I always finish things in the end though, even if it takes a while. Maybe I need to follow your advice about inertia :)

I just now came across this thread, and am very interested in partaking in this. It does look a bit dried up though... It lacks a supervisor. This would be amazing if it could be pulled off.. A ton of songwriters and composers all under one roof for the same song... Good god, this has potential to be very interesting. Maybe I should just go ahead and submit something?

Well. Having spent the last six months rolling up my sleeves and rubbing my hands together, I may actually start working on this in the next week or two :\

Anyone else made any progress?

Chris, that's a good idea. The lack of notifications is a problem, and is something that also detracts from groups on other sites, e.g. Facebook. I don't see the point in joining a load of groups if I have to go and check for new replies manually. I want feeds, this is the 21st century :\ Any luck talking to NING?

I am still down for doing a section of this, and I'm going to go ahead anyway, as I need the practice. Perhaps an announcement on the main page might prompt some more interest? We have over 400 members now.

You know these groups all seem to die because we do not by default get notification when there are any replies. You have to actually make a post to see the reply to the thread. I think if you join a group it would be awesome to get a daily summary of all your groups. I will send this idea to NING devs...

I see. So this is totally "production-oriented." Should be called "mix", not "piece." I miss the scores. I'm not sure I'm interested if it's only audio-based. Do I understand correctly that the end of a track ovelaps (crossfades?) with the start of the next? That's a radio station, not a piece. (And a bad station at that, one that cuts the track ends like many do.) Sorry for my brief interjection on this group, taking your time, and leading to nothing.
