Music Composers Unite!

HI all ..

looking forward to discussing orchestrating ( and I assume arranging as well )

I know we can add mp3 files for audio, but what formats are acceptable for scores, etc ?

Myself, I use Finale 2006c on a iMac with OSX10.3, but I know others use Sibelius, Encore, pencil and paper, scribing on a stone etc ..

will PDF files work ?

I use Finale 2007, but you can do a neat trick by checking "print to file" and selecting .pdf as the format, then you get nice adobe .pdf files that anyone can read regardless of their software :) Scribing on stone is pretty cool too, i would like to etch an entire symphony on the brooklyn bridge!

Okay:

heres an attempt to put up the score to
Pleadding Dim Cap" which I posted an mp3 file of earlier ...
for those who like to read the score whilst listening ..

Man. That piece is so cool. Post it here, for those that are/will be in the Orchestrators group but not the Jazz group... Also, your PDF is cutting a few measures off of every page. What an ending! b9 - 7 - 1 !!!! In your face, audience!

I know I screwed up the PDF ..sorry ..what I thought I sent was a nice clean page view version ..but somehow ...

I've often said the tech stuff is not my forte!

"i've often said the tech stuff is not my forte!"

i've found the inscribed rock is really hard to attach to an email... ;) (actually, it is a great way to keep some people from "copying" it by "accident" and having it find its way onto some music stands somewhere...)

i use finale, only because it is what i have used forever and i am not willing to go through the learning curve (i did that last year moving from DP to Logic, not for the weak of heart)

finale works great for what i need it for, but i've heard that 2007 has issues. and from what i've seen of sibelius, i wish it would have been around 13 years ago.

Rolin:

My Finale Guru /editor /copyist , Steve Sample, went to 2007 and its been giving him fits for a year. This had a large bearing on my sticking with 2006c!

and like everyone else, I'm waiting for some improvements in both the chord input and the construction of drum parts!

Before sending off a score, I STILL hand write in the chords and drum part by hand on a rough printout ..and let Steve ( who has years of experience with Finale on me ) sort it out.

OMG I know your pain man, I went from DP to Cubase this year, moving off my tired old mac to a PC (Creation Station from Sweetwater) and while the PC is really the best one i ever had I have had more aggrivation with relearning how to work in cubase. If the problems with my Giga setup hadnt been worse I would have been moaning lots about cubase :\

I used to be such an expert with Encore (remember that one?) Ahh, it was so nice to be able get it in the computer that fast...

I've used Mosaic, Finale and Sibelius and Sibelius is definitely my package of choice. But I keep up on Finale as I still have clients who request it.

If anyone has any Sibelius or Finale questions, I'm pretty good at finding solutions or work arounds.

Finale 2007 promised a lot but it still doesn't have the dynmaic parts thing right. Sibelius really has a great handle on the dynamic parts. I used Mosaic for 12 years and once you get accustomed to the dynamic part thing, it's hard to go to part extraction. Big time saver, IMHO.

By the way, I don't want to start a Finale vs Sibelius thread. Finale has great output, it's been my experience that I can do it faster with Sibelius and for me deadlines are usually an issue.

Again, happy to help with Finale (2003-2007) and Sibelius questions if you have any.

So John are you a pro copyist? from what i read of your posts it would seem so, I will get my copyist to join here also and maybe we can get a nice group of copyists chatting and sharing ideas too!

Okay John:

If you have any Finale workarounds to the several problems I've already posted here
( i.e. complex chord input, drum part hassles, etc ) ,I'd love to hear them!

..and so would several other guys I know!

Chris, thank you for that info. I also have Finale 2007, but have not been taking advantage of the "print to file" option. I downloaded Primo PDF and it has taken me much longer to get my scores in pdf format than I really want to spend.

There is just so much in Finale to know along with all of the other software a composer uses! When you are are the composer, performer, producer, copyist, and etc., it is difficult to be an expert in every stage of the production. Thanks for that small gem of knowledge!
