I have been writing for music libraries for twenty years. I enjoyed the contract discussion and I too have seen them run the gamut. At midnight 1/1/08 I became the owner of a decent sized library. Our first challenge is to rid the library of the outdated 80's sounding drum box synthy cuts that drove the libraries sales in the past, but in my opinion have reached the end of their shelf life. It is growing more difficult to find great production music that is not available under any number of re-titles on websites all across the internet. Our library is slowly turning the corner into being a high end choice for our customers, with music that is not available everywhere at different prices.
In the contract discussion it was mentioned that some libraries do a non-exclusive, but state that the music cannot be offered in any other music library or similar service. I believe the libraries that operate in that way stand the best chance to gain high end recognition, and a sense of exclusivity in the music library market. I, as a music library owner, do not like finding the music I represent on other sites, especially at a lower price.
